I had some grafts take a couple months to show life. I assumed they were dead, but they weren't. It seems more common with spindly rootstock. I had a northern spy graft on my frankentree last year that I thought didn’t take. I checked it a couple weeks ago and there’s a nice new bud. It had grown an inch or so last year but, should grow well this year.

My tags came with my grafting knife. I can see the problem expressed above happening. I hadn’t thought about that when labeling. I was also dumb enough to mix up two sticks. They are on the same tree but I don’t know what they are. I have some unknowns, especially on franken trees..

I tried the write on tags but like Stu said they don’t last too long. My latest ones I bought an engraving pen and hopefully a little heavier duty tag. I also attached them with two wires. No waving in the wind. I’m wondering if the deer or coons also chewed on them.

I had to do a little re-grafting tonight after my mother in law dropped a heavy box on my 5 gallon bucket of grafted trees that I had resting in the corner of my garage. Most of them were fine, but 4 were snapped off and had to be regrafted.
I wasn't too happy, but I'm glad I noticed it tonight rather than a week from now. Luckily for me, my scion suppliers art and stu sent a couple sticks of each variety so I was able to regraft all the same varieties.

My frankentrees aren't labeled either, so it should be quite a surprise to both me and the deer what varieties are dropping.

I put about 6 to a bucket, wasn’t sure when to transfer over to pots; don’t have a nursery so they went into 3 gallon RB2s. How long ago did you graft them? I’d wait at least 2 weeks for them to callous over and then make sure there’s no frost in the forecast. I usually graft, put them in moist sawdust or sand in a dark room for the initial two weeks to callous over. The dark seems to hold back top growth until they’ve calloused. Yours look good.

These were grafted at least a month ago. They will stay in my garage for a week or two I think. They get some light as we have those little windows on the top part of the garage doors.

Hang in there for a couple weeks. Since they’re potted in rootmakers, you could put them in a jet sled and move them to partial sun (maybe north side of your house) during the days and then drag back inside to stay warm at nights. Beware of direct sun You don’t want the new growth getting burned by the sun. Just don’t forget to bring them inside if there’s going to be a frost. Also beware if you have rabbits in the neighborhood because they’d eat the tender shoots. Smallchunk can vouch for that.

Grafted 11 persimmon today. Root stock are wild saplings and scion came from the best tree on dads old place. If my grafts work I’ll have persimmon hanging thru November around my best plot.

My grafts from this spring are looking really good! I ended up getting 10 B.9 for at home and 10 antonovka from Burnt Ridge. I also got 20 dolgo seedling rootstocks from Blue Hill. I also had 10 or so B.118 that were fails from last year that I grafted to. I believe all (I still haven’t planted all of them 😅) have took and are growing. I really liked grafting to Dolgo. The Dolgo from Conner. I really liked using the “sawdust” that I collected from a dead white pine I cut down and collected from the edge of the yard.

Were the dolgo from SLN or Blue Hill? I think Connor is SLN.

I don't even want to plant out this year's successful grafts. As soon as I do, I'll need to spend time everyday keeping them watered. Not sure what I'm going to do.

I believe I grafted about 10 scion of crabs (thank you to Mr Bur) and 11 of persimmon. This is the first sign of life that I have seen. I think this is was my third attempt ever. I’m pretty excited that I’m at least not 100% failure. I also found 1 lone crab apple on the wild tree that I grafted to. Amazing what removing vine honeysuckle and providing a little sunlight can do. I scratched a couple of my sticks and I still see green so I will continue to watch and wait.
