I believe I grafted about 10 scion of crabs (thank you to Mr Bur) and 11 of persimmon. This is the first sign of life that I have seen. I think this is was my third attempt ever. I’m pretty excited that I’m at least not 100% failure. I also found 1 lone crab apple on the wild tree that I grafted to. Amazing what removing vine honeysuckle and providing a little sunlight can do. I scratched a couple of my sticks and I still see green so I will continue to watch and wait. Do I see blossoms on that one?

Avenarus on anaros interstem on dolgo rootstock. The stick in the back is for birds to land on and hopefully not land on my graft.

Smitty’s seedling on ranetka. I left the nurse limb longer for a bird perch. I need to decide which Smitty’s to save. should I clip one now, later this summer, or in the spring?

2 weeks ago nothing. Today success. Persimmon grafts. First time ever trying. Most show no signs of life but these took off with a sprint.

it is tough to see by the picture, but my grafts are doing well. The larger rootstock made a big difference and improved my luck versus the tiny rootstock from last year. I went 14/16 and I have at least one survivor from all of the varieties. My top working on large frankentrees did well when topworked early, but those grafted in June didn't do as well.

It seems like I have better luck when topworking if I have some shade on the scion. Maybe leaving the nurse limb or limbs on the south side. If I am just adding scion to a limb on a flowering crab, the south side of the tree is not the best choice. Perhaps earlier topworking helps with the heat we have had in June.
