After losing my CPA of 40 years a few years ago I got a new one for one year and he forgot to write the mileage off on one truck for work and it cost me $1800. Shit canned him as I don't like mistakes when it comes to taxes. Now the new CPA gal I thought was good forgot we had overpaid MN state taxes by $1500 in 2019 and I just got a 4 page letter from MN Revenue telling me I over paid 2020 taxes because we had money left over from 2019. Should I give this chick the ax for not doing her job or give her another shot? Are there any good tax CPA's left anymore?

^ Your right.....not many good ones out there anymore. I had some issues like that too......and wonder about the high price of filing returns for the results we get. In that first situation.....could the CPA have amended your return to get the milage refund? (Maybe a question for Big Jerry). I think it does take some time for CPA's to get to know you and your situation. Damn human conditions.

Nope, ain't worth the chance of an audit.

The part that pisses me off is paying these clowns $200-$250 and hour for poor work. That's what pisses me off.

Most of those independent jobbers don't charge enough, and they try to make it up by grinding complex returns through as quickly as possible. I used to work on acquisitions for the big green tax monster, and every single outfit we looked at was horrendously underpricing their work. And it showed. Staff wasn't paid well, the office hadn't been updated since the 1970s, systems and equipment were antiquated. The owners worked 120 hours a week through the filing deadline because they couldn't afford to pay an experienced person to do experienced returns.

Just finding a CPA around here is a problem. I'm not happy with ours in Browerville, but there are zero choices in L.P. There's a guy in Eagle Bend who I may try. I really don't want to deal with anybody closer to St. Cloud.

The lawyer my FIL used to manage the contract for deed thing on Nassau Deluxe was worthless too. Names wrong, addresses wrong in the documents, missed deadlines. We had to proof-read and tell him line by line what was wrong. It makes you wonder if the contract legal language is proper. We worked through it though. But, I'll never use that dude for anything on my own.
Hard to find professionals. My tax dude is mostly useless too.

I think charging $250/hour is plenty for the results I am getting. But I would pay an extra 1/2 hour if they would just double check their work.

good to know I am not the only one with questionable tax person.... My guy retired a couple years ago and I really trusted him. He hates the government and the tax laws.
His daughter took over the business, and now I have some lady doing mine and I just am uncomfortable with her. I was going to leave this year, but I dont know where to go. i asked some friends and they kinda feel the same way. I wasnt able to get any solid leads as to where to go.

I remember back in the day I used to pay H&R Block about $45 for our tax return. Baaahahahahahhahahahaahahaahahaa. So freaking complicated and expensive today.

My guy is actually pretty good but he forgot to do my Iowa state tax return, even though I forwarded him all the farm information. Just an honest mistake, but kind of a big one. I won't can him though, he is better than anyone else around here.

My daughter is a CPA, and hates doing even her own taxes. She said the US tax code is too complicated and the computer program for a CPA to use for taxes always needs updating at a huge cost every year. She has no desire to get into taxes.

My daughter is a CPA, and hates doing even her own taxes. She said the US tax code is too complicated and the computer program for a CPA to use for taxes always needs updating at a huge cost every year. She has no desire to get into taxes. Our CPA is a widowed farm wife who had to do something to pay the bills when her husband died in his 40s. She is honest with us and I appreciate that. She says the changes that were made to the tax code this year really threw her practice for a loop. Between the code changes and deadline movement, she fell behind. I think she probably has too many clients. I do know that she completes farmer's taxes first, other people who owe money next, and everybody else can wait. I'm okay with that. This year I don't think our taxes will be completed until sometime next month. That seems a bit excessive. We'll give her one more year and see if next year things go smoother. She hasn't made any errors that I'm aware of, and did catch a few errors that my old (really expensive) CPA in WI had made.
