I am considering buying MOST of my seeds now for 2022. From my experience this year.....I am quite sure how I plan to plant at two times in 2022. Once in June when I will plant these seeds over 10 total acres:
Summer Seeds (all from Green Cover Crop) Drill in Mid June 1. 25 # / acre Warm Season Mix (5 - 50# bags = $317.50) 2. 25 # / acre Buckwheat ( 5 - 50# bags = $187.50) 3. 10 # / acre Sunflower. (2 - 50# bags = $65.00) (To the above I will add in some existing inventory of Impact forage collards, Sugar Beets, Soy beans)
Total seeds cost outlay for June Planting = $ 570.00
Fall Seeds (all from Green Cover Crop) Drill in Late Aug / early September 1. 100#/acre Cereal Rye Elbon. 20 - 50 # bags @ $14. / bag = $280.00 2. 10# /acre Brassica Plus Release 2 - 50# bags @ $128.00 = $254.00 (To the above add current stock of clover, GHR, and collards)
Total Seed Cost outlay for August Planting= $534.00
Total Cost for 2022 = $1104 (plus some existing seeds)
Hopefully low fertilizer and herbicide costs.

I’ve got a small start on next years seed. Have some leftover brassicas. Added some Japanese millet. WTI winter greens for my west plot. And a bag of arctic forage oats from deer creek. I ordered cheap spring oats but they brought out the expensive arctic forage oats. I didn’t notice til I got home. I’m not complaining.

I'm pretty sure I've got what I need already.

Yep....I may add some seeds like Japanese Millet too.....and try it in a few low areas around my swamp. I also bought a bag of Egyptian wheat screen......and some pumpkin seeds. I got those pumpkin seeds early so I can convert my planter plates to use the big seeds. Gotta ream out some plates to fit......and figure out the gearing for my planter. I may add a few seeds later too....but if I buy it all at once I get one shipping charge and it's here and ready when I get back from OZ. Gotta plan ahead when your gone all winter. That above order would total 1700 lbs. Lots of Rye in there....not sure it pays to ship Rye from Nebraska. Still....it costs to run after it too. EDIT: I am considering having them blend my summer and fall seeds together and put it all into bags for me. Would simply planting. The thing is.....I might change my plan.....and then I am screwed. Decisions / Decisions.

I have leftover pumpkin seed. I bought a pound this year. We just plant those by hand. I’ve got about 1.5 lbs of Egyptian wheat left. I’ll mix in the jap millet and ring part of the field next year with it for a screen. I love planning this shit. I draw up the layout on CAD at work.

That should last me a few years. I'd have to check, but I think I've got around 15 lbs. of brassica mix and probably 50 lbs. or more of various clovers. Also got a 5 lb. bag of small burnet I'm going to frost seed next spring. I keep things simple around here

So....I got to thinking about blending seeds together for my drill. I know I can buy blended seeds at Green Cover Crop.....into almost any blend I want. But sometimes my thoughts change over time......so I think about doing the blending myself. ,<----that is a fair amount of work when it's hot outside. Lots of lifting and shoveling and mixing to get a nice blend for 10 acres.....plus you gotta handle everything multiple times. ARGH.
So I thought.....why dont I buy a good old plastic cement mixer and blend those seeds myself and put them into 5 gallon pails to land the drill. That way I could blend about 2 or three acres into about 10 pails and be done in three batches. I think I could find a decent enough mixer for $100 or so....and save some grunt time. It's not getting any easier to do this chit....with my age and all.
Any better ideas??

I keep things simple around here This year I mixed a bag of WTI tall tine tubers with 5 lbs of daikon radish, 5 lbs of DER, and 5 lbs of winfred brassica. I’ve got about 5 lbs leftover. Should be enough for my field plot next year. Going to try a bag of WTI winter greens on my west plot. Might open up a small new area next year (2,500 sq ft or so) and put some type of brassica mix in with some clover to eventually turn it into perennial clover.

I’m going to order a bunch of clover from welter eventually. Probably nov/dec timeframe so I have it for sure for frost seeding and beyond.

I’m sitting on quite a horde myself.
Alfalfa Medium red Frosty Berseem Alice white Chicory Turnips Burnet
All that shit is going on the big plot next year. Maybe.
Also have a half pound or so of pumpkin seeds. I have a problem with moderation.

I bet if I weighed all my seed in my inventory right now.....I could have a few hundred lbs on the shelf. Much of this will get used next year.....as I will blend it into some other mixes. It's just a hazard of our illness. .

I aim to get mine just before real farmers know if they're going to need cover seed for prevent plant. March 1st would be about right for me. I might get the small seeds sooner, but most of those are already in and set on autopilot. Should only need a bag of flax, 2 wheat, 10 more lbs of vetch, some squash/pumpkin, and maybe a 10 pound blend of white and yellow sweet clover.

I kinda wish I could wait. But it gets crazy for me in May and June. And when I cannot get what I want for a fair price (or on my terms) I get frustrated. Thus....I think I will pull the trigger tommorow.....and get that stuff here before I go to OZ in December. (Much of my cost is the rye and buckwheat cover / mulch..... which I will use in place of fertilizer and hebacide.) Not gonna get any cheaper. Sure hope this plan works. .
