Kooch- I usually just cut a bunch of willows and ROD out of the swamp and then start sticking them. Anything from pencil sized all the way up to big poles. Had probably a 90+% success with them rooting and sprouting vegetation out, but the weeds are the biggest problem. They cant compete well with 3-4ft goldenrod and other junk. The deer also put a hurting on them whenever they get a chance. Willow is definitely more hardy than ROD. I did buy some op-367 poplars from Big Rock in 2015 tubed them they're probably 30ft tall at least. I coppiced a couple of them and use their shoots to clone new. But all my willow and rod are just wildlings. This year I'm going to actually do it right and fence/landscape fabric a nice brick of cuttings, then also fence and experiment with treflan and simazine on the planting site to keep the weeds down. Every ROD willow or poplar I put in my propagation box or pot at home is 2-3ft of growth and massive roots so I get to churn as many solid plants at home as I can. I'm going to be doing a similar project like you in the next few years hopefully. Filling in a large piece of blank canvas with some cover and I think cuttings are the way to go. I'm going to try and attach a file if i can it's a willow producers handbook. But it's from upstate New York it has detailed instructions for massive willow cutting plantings that they use for biofuel. They go over site prep herbicide and all that if i remember right the cutting per acre is around 6-7k so will need a lot of material. But yeah I'll take some pics and do a couple progress pics on some ROD and willow this year 9-10 years ago I did hundreds of hybrid poplar from Big Rock with black plastic and fencing. It was a block used for a road screen. Worked great. No matting and no protection was a complete waste for us.

Did you guys till up the ground underneath the plastic or just lay it over the ground?

Did you guys till up the ground underneath the plastic or just lay it over the ground? Just put it down in the spring right before planting. Over a bunch of grass that was flattened by winter snow. Lots of ground staples.

I don’t know if reed canary grass is present in your area but my best luck was to mow, mow, roundup, roundup, and then black plastic(which was recycled silage bags from a dairy). Reed canary has a tremendous root system and usually a ton of seeds in the soil. The willows have done best where I never removed the plastic.

I'm probably gonna do that to 10-15 acres with some tubed oaks and a little but of other stuff mixed in. The biggest pain would be collecting all the cuttings might have to stage it in different years...but large scale with good ground treatment and pre emmergant I think if you beat the weeds and deer firs year those roots would set in and you'd be good to go.

Welcome Trooper, some of us got kicked off HT several years ago.
I noticed all those fox and coyote pelts in your photo. Are you a trapper as well?

I'm not too familiar with Reed canary grass I will definitely give the plastic a whirl though. Dont wana waste time with mass plantings anymore only to have them get choked out by the weeds. I saw a couple videos of guys rooting massive willow cuttings basically 8-10ft poles and they root the same will they a few of those out this year too. I did a couple polar logs and bigger willows last year and they rooting but the deer mauled all the growth off. Was kind of nice while it lasted the new shoots were already a foot over the weed height

Market is shit and has been shit for the last few years. I still trap my farm to help the turkeys and fawns though so I didnt get too rusty haha

That is some serious trapping numbers.
I live box trap the occasional coon or possum to save a nest. I’d like to do more damage to them. I probably should get some dog proof.
Coyote trapping is another issue. I’d just as likely catch a bobcat as a coyote. I released one at my cousins place last year and it wasn’t easy. I’d rather not be that close to a snarling cat.
