Trooper, have you had anything made out of those furs for personal use?
My Dad had a pair of chopper mits made for me out of some kit beavers. Fur is on the outside and wool liners go inside. They are the warmest mittens you can find.

That’s awesome Trooper. I hunted in Carroll County during your rifle season. My brother shot a deer on Monday. The gut pile was untouched the whole week. In New Hampshire the gut piles are gone within 24 hours between coyotes, raccoons, crows, and ravens so we thought there weren’t many coyotes there. Then he saw a group of 5 yotes come through so I guess there’s plenty of them there. I’d love to have you give some coyote trapping tips. I’ve been saying I need to trap some for the past 10 years.

Cool thing about this forum. A new guy shows up and everyone wants to pick his brain and learn from him, not belittle and talk down to him.
The insults come later once we know you.

Nh- yeah man we are loaded with yotes in Ohio. Where were you hunting at private or public? I'm gonna try make a trapping thread here soon. I will make it more for the wildlife management side of things since I doubt anyone is really wanting to get into the fur side. Most of the basic trappin stuff you can come by online but there's a lot of overlooked stuff I'll try to cover that help. It's best to get your sets and system done planned right out of the gate because coyotes get educated very quickly.

Holy shit that is some impressive trapping! Any good hacks on trapping river otters? And welcome! Thanks man. I wish I could help but there aren't any otters where I trap. I know guys who catch them in beaver sets but the real otter killers are setting specific for otter, and gang setting an area like a blockade with 5-10 traps so when the whole otter family moves through you can catch them all in one shot.

That gang setting makes sense. I was hunting in Quebec along a small 4’ wide stream years ago and had a group of 4 of them come along the stream towards me. They were playing around chasing each other. They got to within 3’ of me and never saw me. I had it on video tape at the time. I’d find their run and make some slide sets where they slide down a muddy bank into the water along with a couple bank pocket sets at the water line.

It was land we’d never stepped foot on so it took a few days to get the lay of the land The owner now lives near my brother. We had to live out of a hotel room for a week. That was the tough part for me. What I need on the trapping info is specific traps, stakes and other tools. I’ve got several spots picked out and get that. I then need to know the trap placement from the hole. My issue is bear. I need to set them in November after the bear have denned up. I also have a few very large bobcat which are protected in NH that would need to be released if I caught them. We have a few gray fox that have survived the coyotes that have been eating my brassicas the fall. They like purple top turnips. I’d never have thought so. I know they eat apples.

Holy shit that is some impressive trapping! Any good hacks on trapping river otters? And welcome! Glad to see you back. I had an otter go through my yard this week. Those otters used to raise hell on small pothole lakes in the north country. My Dad trapped a few as incidental catches while trapping beaver.

Ok ill work on something. I'll get into it more but you need good equipment. I use Minnesota brand traps or MB. I think the MB'550 and MB 650 are top knoctch when it comes to coyote. 550s if you're going to be clipping fox as well since they are smaller. 4 coiled is standard. You need that speed to bust through the dirt. A couple big things off the top of my head which I'm going to get into is # of traps set. Most people dont use enough and are missing animals. I usually run 2 sets per location for coyote. Each set has at least 1 but up to 4 traps per set. Usually 2 trap sets. So on average 1 prime location will have 2 sets with 2 traps. You also need to look into cable stakes, or earth anchors. Rehbar stakes are obsolete in every way. I use duck bill earth anchors. We dont have bear in OH where I'm at so I dont have that problem but I do hunt bear down in Georgia. I think like you said wait til they are hibernating and you'll he good. Most big bears could bust out of a coyote trap but a 75lb cub might get locked up for sure and I wouldn't wana deal with that haha. I didnt know the grays ate turnips that's wild. I was surprised ro see how much them and yotes like apples and pears too
