At least you didn’t try to let this one go!! Almost did a release just for the excitement of it, but went a different route.

First set if the yr; 3 traps caught 2 skunks. Exactly what I was after! Hopefully a couple more in the morning.

The cat pic'd above ended up a rug. First try at making leather. Enjoyable except to fleshing. I'm not great at fleshing the head.

2 out of 3 traps almost every night. Too many nest robbers around.

A couple less egg robbers! Fur is looking good.

Are you skinning the skunks?
My Dad did that in the 30’s and Grandma made him hang his clothes outside.

This one would be a great one to tan but she sprayed when I dispatched her and I don't think I want to mess with it that bad. First one to spray this yr.

My Dad said he dug some out from under an old building. It seems like the story was that he got over $3 per hide and in those days the total farm income was about $300 for the year.
He also made ax handles out of bur oak and sold them to the hardware store for $.10. Sorry to steal your thread.

It's great stuff! $3-5 is what I remember getting.

First one to spray this yr. How do you dispatch the skunk? .22 through the chest. If you hit the central nervous system they seem to always spray. A quiet. 22 through the chest and they just kind of lay down and die peacefully.

Wouldn't the skunk smell horrible even if it didn't spray when killed? I've had a few die without spraying, but I don't remember them being scent-free by any stretch.
Some of them have some excellent looking fur though.
