End of March, if we are lucky! Ya. I remember one year here I had snow on the north side of the house in mid May. I couldn't get a shovel in the ground to plant trees that year until May 9, and even then there were spots in the shade where I couldn't get the spud in the ground. . The frost is always late to come out, down under the reed canary grass.

I wanted a couple pear rootstocks for spring since I'm getting a few pear scions in exchange for some wild apple/crab scions. Ordered a couple from SLN...then remembered I'd been wanting a Redstone Canyon Gold apple from them and that my Ely pear grafts failed last year. Soooo...got another couple fruit trees coming too.
It really is a sickness.

I guess there will be franken trees.

Plus there are two or three potted trees buried in the garden. And maybe another tree coming.

I'm "lucky" that I keep finding wild crabs. Gives me plenty of places to mess around with scions.

Once I know they produce pea sized fruits, I change them over.

I have bad luck with Liberty at camp. I planted a bunch and they all died the first or second winter. I also had Chestnut crab do the same thing. I have since planted Chestnut from SNL and they are doing great. My theory is the rootstock from Cummins was the cause. That being said one of those Liberty is in my back yard at home and doing great. I was going to try grafting it back at camp on some crab apple trees. The zone 4 designation still concerns me but it sounds like some of you guys have Liberty in places as cold as me. Will Liberty survive -30 or -40?

It's seen a number of lows in the -20s to -30s over the years. That said, we'll see if it wakes up this spring after last year's drought.

I had an elm fall on one of my native trees and smashed it pretty good, I will turn that into a Frankenstein tree and make sure I get some Liberty on there. Who knows with global warming, I don’t think we have seen -30 in 3 years and it use to be common to have a few of those every year.

My Liberty produces fruit every year. They aren't my favorite for fresh eating, but the critters sure like them. At some point when I have more fruit, I also imagine Liberty will be a very good addition to sweet cider.

How about gold rush? Same deal, grows at home but died at camp. I see zone listed all over the map from 3 to 5. I know the one I lost was the polar vortex year here we had -40’s.

I've never tried it here. I see folks in areas south of me having issues with long enough growing seasons for it to ripen, so I've always assumed it wouldn't ripen here. I also have my doubts about how winter hardy it would be.

I need to check who/where I purchased it.
