I have never shot a deer under an apple tree but had two small bucks under a tree two years ago on opening day. I do think the variety of apples and drop times keeps them on the property. I almost tagged a nice 8 in my crab apple set up last year. I put a blind there in 2021, sat there 2 times and never saw a deer. However, I had multiple bucks there during the evening hours (on camera). Just never when I was there. Maybe Next year !

Food plots have shown a notable difference in this to me in the short 3 years we've had our hills place. Basically no food the first year. 1/2 acre or so the 2nd year and about 1.5 acres the 3rd year. Hopefully the 40 or so crabs I'll have will provide something in 10 years. Until then, food plots are the answer.

I've had really good luck hunting around old apple trees on some other properties I have permission to hunt. Apple trees are certainly not a quick fix, but if done right they can draw in deer for 50 years. I'm hoping to back off my food plot efforts once my apple trees start producing heavily.

If I live long enough, I expect to shoot a buck in one of my orchards sooner or later. My buck this year was my first in the orchard. I must say it was pretty freaking awesome.

When can I start cutting scion?
I need to gather some persimmon, pear and maybe a couple of apple from local sources.

People I communicate with in the mid south have been taking scions for a week or so. As long as the trees are dormant, you can cut scions. I usually wait until mid March to cut scions for myself.

I’m debating whether to prune this weekend or not. 45 today and tomorrow. But -2 on Sunday morning. I’ll probably wait until next weekend and just drop more trees tomorrow.

Wow, that'd be great Well we will be in the 50s next Thursday and Friday but, below zero a day or two in between. This three week time span is the longest I’ve taken off from habitat in the past 13 years. The saw’s going to be going tomorrow

The saw’s going to be going tomorrow I think your weather there is more akin to what I had at my old place. Plenty of cold and snow, but some days of respite along the way. It seems winter sets in here in November and doesn't leave until the end of March.

I couldn't get a shovel in the ground to plant trees that year until May 9, and even then there were spots in the shade where I couldn't get the spud in the ground.
