More topworking yesterday. Converted a fireblight magnet of a pear that has regrown root suckers vigorously after I cut the entire thing off a couple years ago. This property also has some wild mulberry which are not completely worthless but leave a lot to be desired. So I had ordered some scion and added 3 varieties to one rootstock: Illinois Everbearing, Big White and Wellington mulberry. And then topped a couple smaller trees to single variety Planted a King David benchgraft from last year for good measure.

Seeing signs of success with my pear and apple grafting this year. Much better than last year so I guess practice makes improvement. bradford pear grafted over to something better. Wild crab I’m turning into a Franken. It has my one successful graft from a sandbur Buckman last year. This is a graft from this year.

I planted 8 N Whitetail crabs this year. Some were whips and others had several low branches. My initial thought was to pls t and give them a year before I prune anything.
I was reading on the snowflake sight and now I think I should have pruned down to a whip. The trees are starting to wake up last weekend.
Would you prune at planting? If you think they should be pruned would you do so after they woke up?

I didn’t prune my Whitetail crabs. I’ll remove lower branches next year. They grow fast.

If you want an apple that tastes pear like, plant a Hudson's Golden Gem. Unique flavor I liked the few times I've gotten to try them. I've got two. One is 9 years old and yet to produce a fruit. I don't think the fruit buds can take winter temps here. I've decided HGG just isn't hardy enough here. A graft from last year appears to have died back most of the way to the rootstock. My older tree may have a bloom or two, but it looks like it too has some dieback. I'd sure love to grow the variety here, but it doesn't seem promising.

I never got up to the river bottoms to check how my trees bloomed this year but I think we avoided any late frosts. Curious to see what they produce this year. Need the trapper guy to take some coons out again first part of July. Give my trees a chance then.

I need to check the tag, but I think it is Bullock.

Bullock survives here, but it isn't a fast grower. I'd have to check, but I may have a blossom or two on a Bullock.

This is my one and only graft success with Arts scions last year. Buckman on a wild crab. You can see the difference between wild orange spotted leaves and the Buckman

Kieffer onto a bradford pear. Bark grafts all doing very well. When do I thin to the best shoot or should I let them all go?

Next spring, if they all wake up and start growing, nip all but the strongest shoot down to a 1" stub. I don't know if that's "right" or not, but that's what I do.
