When I built this place I was bleeding money on various add ons and I ended up going cheap with carpet in a few rooms. Some has worn well and some hasn't. At any rate, I'm ready to swap the carpet for some type of hard floors. We're leaning towards a porcelain tile that looks like wood. The other option we've considered is laminate. Can't go with hardwood because it's a slab home. It seems even the laminate may be less than ideal with in-floor heat. The porcelain tile we have in other areas of the house has worn well and still pretty much looks like new. Other than initial higher cost, what possible downsides to using tile do you guys see?

I like tile. My only recommendation is to go with a light color. Our darker wood floors show dust horribly.

I think the tile that looks like wood is pretty nice stuff!

Masking tape over concrete, skim coat, dye the skim and pull the tape. Have to seal it and it won't clean as easy as tile but nice for bigger rooms.

We're 90% sure we'll go with the higher end "Luxury Vinyl Tile" in the new place. We've got a budget to keep at Nassau Deluxe, and the higher end versions of this seem nice enough.

^^^I understand the budget deal. I had one when I built this place too, that's why there's carpet in some rooms now.
Whatever product gets installed next, I'd like it to be the last flooring product I have to worry about. If I live here another 30 years (doubtful) I don't want to have to do any more flooring (periodic throw rugs not withstanding).

I have hardwood in this place. I wouldn’t do it again. Every knick and scratch feels like the end of the world.

I think this may be old info.....but I saw some tile that was installed over a heated floor.....and the tile turned color due to the heat. Quite some years ago.....but whatever you put in....make sure it's rated for heated floors. We dont have heated floors in OZ....but have tile here with area rugs. Kinda like that approach...but some say its hard on their joints on tile floors. It is a bit cold at times on bare feet. We have distressed wood floor in MN...and really like it. Does not show dirt.....but here in OZ a wood floor can be a pistol. Research before you buy. 2 cents.

Hardwood isn't an option on concrete floors, too much moisture. We could go with laminate, but you have to make sure the in floor temp doesn't go above 80. We usually keep it right around 78 in the winter. I'm also unimpressed with how most laminate looks. The sections of our home that are tile or vinyl (entry way) feel the best on bare feet in the winter. Hard surfaces transmit that radiant heat the best. They are also the most comfortable when it's hot outside.

Going to look at some flooring options in a bit. In advance, I pulled the flooring quote from the house build (going to the same flooring place today). This is gonna be painful. I had $11K in tile (kitchen and master bath) 10 years ago.

I'm guessing we'll be awful close to $30K Pretty sure we're gonna go with this stuff. You'd swear it was wood even up close

You'd swear it was wood even up close I love the wood look. That’s probably a great personal choice for you. Not a good choice for resale if that is in your future.
