The 1/4 beef just went into the locker, man that stuff has really jumped from last year. The farmer selling it, said he could have sold a lot of more. I ordered a 3/4 and lined up the other 1/4s and he said there is a waiting list..if needed.
Crazy.....anyone else stuffing the freezer with beef or pork?

I'll be buying some piglets in the next month or so. Last year I paid $100 for the piglets and I believe I sold them for about $350 when they were about 275 pounds live weight.

Middle men and stores are raping us on beef and pork and who knows what else. I am super happy buying fresh stuff from locals in OTC. Paying FAR less than in stores and getting much better quality in many respects. Troy Becker has the Angus. He brings them to Klinders or Miltona. Troy is south of Vining 5 miles. Bob Roberts has the pigs. He also brings to Miltona for butchering. Bob is on the west end of Ottertail Lake. he has a retail store there as well. Amor Pork. amorpork.com/

Just like when I buy a 1/4 beef? All packaged accordingly to cut, etc. So you can go to your freezer and pull out a couple of pork chops, or bacon or whatever?

Our processor asks what cuts we want, how thick, and how many per package. For example you can get porterhouses or fillets/NY strips. I'm not seeing ranchers getting rich right now. Increases at the sales barn are not offsetting the prices of fuel and feed. www.cattle.com/markets/states/Kansas-cattle-prices.aspxPlus replacing culls with a cow/calf pair is going to cost $1600 min. With that said I think cattle are better right now than growing plant based foods. Fuel, fertilizer, super-weeds and the chems needed to keep them at bay, etc are outrageous!

How much are they this year ? I haven't called my piglet guy yet, but piglet prices from other farmers on Craigslist seem similar to last year. I'm assuming the price of finished hogs will increase though since pig feed is much higher than last year. I planted more oat/field peas this year that I'll cut by hand and use for feed. I'm hoping that will decrease my purchased feed bill a little.

I paid $100 per piglet and sold them for $350 for each live finished pigs (250-300 pound live weight range). We just butchered them ourselves, so the price per pig would be more if you had to pay someone to butcher them. Eventually I might try some of the heritage breeds of pigs that are supposed to taste better. They also sell for 3X+ the price, but the downside is that they grow slower so I couldn't just buy them in the spring and butcher them in the fall. I might try that sometime if I feel ambitious.

Gotcha! As far as the heritage pigs go....Do it! They taste great. Maybe mix some in w/ spring to fall types.
