Cold on stand this afternoon. Damn wind can stop any time. My place is surrounded by ag, my neighbor typically disks his fields after he harvest but this year he didn't. So the deer which typically stay to the north and west are coming south and east which is basically on top of me. I won't be able to access some of my better stands now as the deer are bedding near them. I did have a nice 8 go by me and several doe. I also was outside my shed and heard a racket so I walked to the end of my shed and had a dozen turkeys 20 feet from me. Wind is suppose to slow down tomorrow so hopefully it won't be so cold. Well, I finally found where all the better deer have been hanging out this season, there on the north end of my marsh which borders my neighbor's un-disced field. There must be allot of waste corn this year as the deer are dispersed across allot of fields. I am also thinking with the dry weather the deer are bedding in the marsh. The deer on my place have often bed on the edge of the marsh but this fall being so dry they are crossing pretty much everywhere in the marsh. Added to that my neighbor did not hunt his place the deer have a secluded 100 acres to the north of me where they can walk out of the marsh and feed in his field. Marsh is great to have as it can protect deer but it is very hard to hunt particularly when they are on the far side of the marsh. Not sure if I can overcome this problem as the access is terrible, the wind is wrong, and the retrieval would be difficult at best. Shots would be in the 150 to 250 yard range but they would be right on the line of my neighbors property. If I am killing deer and I doubt he would care but I would need to make certain he is OK with this. Potentially a future deer stand placement project. I checked my dried soybeans and they have not been touched, I guess you can't compete with corn on the ground. Pics of one of his fields and of the Forage Collards which are still green and pliable.

I am in a stand that we have not used this year. One year ago, I had a doe in heat at the bottom of the stand and three bucks milling about. I shot the biggest one. Take a look at the stand today. There appears to be a scrape at the bottom of it and tine marks on the steps. i am hoping for a fawn to come by and will probably be here only a few hours. Two hours and I am done. I also had a very nice 8 pointer come by. He will be bigger next year if he can last a few more hours.

Passed on a spike tonight......I think this is the third time I've seen that idiot....lol. He must have moon-tang on his mind? He came thru and then I am certain he winded me. Froze for a long time before he walked off. I got out my Nose Jammer and sprayed an oak tree next to me as a cover scent.
About 15 minutes later.....saw a large body deer saunter into some heavy brush about 100 yards beyond where that spike winded me. I had a good vantage point to watch for him to leave that brush......but he never did and it got dark on me. I tried a few grunts to lure him out.....no dice.
At least I had some nice encounters tonight and it made the sit interesting. So goes 2022. 6 or 8 passes on does and small bucks. I should likely have watched the end of that Vikings game! Yowsir......sounds like a great finish.
I got 1/2 of a nice deer for steaks and sausage. Probably got 1/4 of a deer left from last year......so we will survive.

You Minnesota guys have it easy. I still have to go through almost 3 more weeks of rifle ending on December 4. I’m in a stand an hour early this morning. 28 with winds. No hut this morning. I did sit in one yesterday for 6 hours of rain.

I am glad the rifle season is done. I want to do a post season walk to look for scrapes and rubs in the areas I haven’t visited for many months. Plus I need to see how many apple trees the local bear tore up. I think there are only 2-3 roosters left on the farm, so I won’t take the shotgun unless I see more. Too damn many turkeys as usual. I think I have two male grouse on the farm from the spring drumming. We had a good season with all one shot kills. Deer numbers are down a bit from last year, but still a good season. I need to get caught up on a few things and then think about winter spearing and fishing.

Maybe the boys smelled it and decided to make a scrape? . I usually go somewhere back on the access trail to piss. Not there. There is a slight break to a swamp on that side of my farm. Through the last thirty years, both ends of that slight hillside have been prime for rut action. This stand is very close to the road where the slope ends and the irrigated fields start.

I don’t care to leave scent from my boots and also wonder about urine odors from medications I take.

I need to fill my diesel canister and get back into the buckthorn war before the snow gets too deep to get around. I was talking to a guy at the Legion yesterday. Sharing deer pics and talking smart. I told him I was ready to get back into doing habitat work instead of hunting. He looked at me like I was nuts. Habitat geeks certainly aren't the norm.

Nothing big moving in Missouri or here at home in MN. Are you in zone 1? If so, this is the week that the big boys make a final pass through. Get the rifle out for the last week!
