I got a message from my neighbor up north. This morning he saw the first deer in daylight of the season. It looked like a yearling doe eating in his yard. He said cameras had shown no daylight activity and no bucks. I suspect they only had buck tags.
Two retired guys I know both hunted 8 days before they saw their first buck and they connected. They are on prime habitat for up there.

This was the buck I hung out with for 3 hrs last Tuesday. I had 3 more encounters with him this past weekend. He was still there last night so if he can stay on my place he has a good chance of surviving for another year. That was the biggest buck I saw during daylight so far. Had a couple of 6s and fork sightings as well.

Oh yeah. Each time he was well within 100 yds, as close as 40. I was holding out that one of the bigger ones I had on cam would make an appearance or he would wander over to my son. Neither happened.

I finally got a new phone, so I should be able to share more pictures than I have recently. Gun season was pretty slow at my place - decent numbers of does, but we didn't see even a single 2.5 year old on my place. I had some decent bucks on camera before season, but nothing showed up while we were hunting. My 10 year old son did shoot a 6 point on our place opening night, so that was really good.
Last night I hunted a friend's farm and connected on this buck about an hour before dark. It died on the edge of an apple orchard I planted on their place over a decade ago, so that was pretty cool.
I might occasionally hunt my place during the late muzzleloader or gun seasons, but now I don't have to take it quite so seriously.

You Minnesota guys have it easy. I still have to go through almost 3 more weeks of rifle ending on December 4. I’m in a stand an hour early this morning. 28 with winds. No hut this morning. I did sit in one yesterday for 6 hours of rain. We are half way through our 14 week rifle season. My spikes are dwindling. I think I am down to one or two from 5-6. The neighbors will never learn. I passed a huge 4 pointer Saturday. He was way past the ears with 7” forks. I think he was 3.5. I have a couple 8’s I was holding out for but have no pics of this deer. He was cruising at 3pm but if he comes back I won’t pass him again. The 8’s are still nocturnal so hopefully they stay that way until next weekend.

Ben—Nice buck !! Any idea on the weight ? Thanks. I was tired by the time we got him home, so I didn't weigh him. He was heavy enough that it was a pain in the butt to get him in my truck though!

Yep. I need to fill my diesel canister and get back into the buckthorn war before the snow gets too deep to get around. I was talking to a guy at the Legion yesterday. Sharing deer pics and talking smart. I told him I was ready to get back into doing habitat work instead of hunting. He looked at me like I was nuts. Habitat geeks certainly aren't the norm. I think most of us on here are not the norm! HEY NOW.....speak for yourself! I resemble that remark. .
