Sitting in deer blind bored. Seeing that I didn't get any thing planted this year do to the afib and wet conditions last spring. I just have some volunteer clover and a whole bunch of weeds and grasses which the deer are hitting so I am starting to make plans for 2023. I have all kinds of seed, rr soybeans, rr sugar beets, impact forage collards, radish and brassica. My plan was to plant the rr soybeans and rr sugar beets in late May. This way I can spray and get the weeds back under control. I would plant the sugar beets on thin side and then after spraying them as needed broadcast the brassicas and collards in late June or early July into the thinly planted sugar beets before a good rain. There should be bare dirt after spraying the sugar beets a couple of times which should enable the collards and brassicas have good seed to soil contact. Also might have Brad plant a few rows of corn around the edge of food plots. What do you guys think?

I've never had any luck with sugar beets. I always kind of figured you wanted that open space between beets so they could grow huge? Would the overseeded brassicas steal nutrients from the beets?

I am not sure of the shape or size of your plots, but would a strip of corn through the middle or an island of corn work better? I am thinking of a crossing point or to break up a bigger plot.

Corn might get less browsing away from the field edge.

2023 plans... replant clover on property next to parents. Weed pit. replant clover on gauntlet plot on the farm. About half of it turned out GREAT, and the other half is just dismal. Planting up to 2 lbs of sweet corn. We are going to fence it and still dont know for sure what the F that will be. We cant keep competing with deer. 3 more apple trees(at least) at cabin. I have 21 now and everything is doing AWESOME there.
Nothing else that I can think of right now.
Plenty of things on the list outside of planting. 1. Add rocks to bridge 2. trim any brush or branches leaning over the trails 3. Bring bobcat to farm to fill ruts in driveway and maybe load rocks or gravel and haul down to bridge 4. Trim pines on road to slough 5. Trim trees around plums by plot behind barn 6. Spread grub killer around the orchard 7. Pull out buckthorn with ATVs and chains like 2021. Anywhere we can get to 8. Get mesh off pear tree trunk 9. Check tree tubes out in CRP 10. Carpet piece for my stand 11. Make 300 yd range 12. Replant grain bin plot 13. Spray glue loose foam in my stand 14. Search for new stand locations 15. Build at least 2 new stands 16. Spray buckthorn 17. Buy steels for 300 yd range

As anyone one on here knows Sugar Beets are my go to planting, deer have been eating 2-5 acres every year for past 15 yrs.
Second go to is soybeans. Third is Beasty Feast (RJ HUNT seed) mixture of rape, turnips, kale and etc etc. First time planting this year, only mistake was to plant in middle of field, they only feed at night out there, Next year closer to woods. Deer are hitting that almost as hard as the sugar beets.
I'd like to plant more corn but don't have equipment to deal with residue, going to try a plot next spring and plant beasty feast the following year mid July, it will give me more time to deal with residue before planting.

I should have been more clear. I've never had any luck growing sugar beets. I have no doubt that deer eat the heck out of them when grown by somebody who knows what they're doing.

I’m putting a lot more effort into food plots in 2023. Early and late. Maximize every acre I can !!

You won’t have time to hunt with that long list. its always a long list.... you need to retire, shorten the list or lose it, and then fish more! Our lives go in cycles. With time, family, and making a living, my primary hobby interests have been deer and fishing during other periods. I now find myself going back and wanting to do some of the fishing that I had done at a younger age. Visit the old hot spots and realizing that I will probably never do this again.

If you get good rain I think the tonnage would be impressive. The rest of it looks good, agree a strip of corn strategically placed helps for a late season draw, cover and an extended line of movement where you can get a good buck to travel.

I will stay with beans and will probably do corn in 2023. I soil tested this fall and my soil is in pretty good shape for amendments so next year most of my cost will be in Urea.
