We see those giant rollers here a lot just after soybean planting, , but this week it seems like the rotary hoes and giant cultipackers are coming out weeks after planting.
I’m assuming crusting soil is the cause, but I’m not sure about that.

This might be a silly question but how long can seed sit in the ground without germinating before it goes bad? This is of course due to lack of moisture.

Crusting must be an issue down here since the last couple days I've seen several farmers our running a rotary hoe over their planted fields. I don't typically see that too often down here. Some guys also have been running big cultipackers over soybean fields they planted a week or two ago and I'm assuming that is for the same reason. I see big rollers being used by they are not shaped like cultipacker wheels. I think they are flattening the soil surface for easier harvest. Probably pushing down some rocks. By getting the ground more level and pushing rocks into the ground.....farmeres can run the combines closer to the ground and pick up some extra beans that otherwise are lost. I suppose a 5 or 10% increase in yield pays to roll. Pretty common now.

I'm a newbie to this but it seems like as long as the seed isn't wet they should be good for a very long time. Bigger concern seems to be weeds getting a head start if they had already germinated, critters eating seed, getting wet before soil temps are sufficient for germination, soil getting crusted over before germination to make emergence difficult, and only getting enough moisture to germinate but then being too dry to continue growth.

Seeds can sit in the ground a long time until conditions are right to germinate. Big farmers here start planting pretty early knowing that the seeds will just sit there for a month. Their crops always seem to do just fine. I get a pile of volunteer corn and soybean plants growing every year from seeds that grew in that area the prior year and were somehow missed by wildlife. Many of the seeds will germinate if there is adequate soil moisture even if it hasn't rained. I planted my fields one week ago and it hasn't rained since then. I checked on the soybean seeds last night and they are starting to sprout. They will do fine as long as their roots can reach some moist soil (covering the seeds with dirt assures this most of the time). If you are just broadcasting seed on the surface, then rain is more important.

^. I think it is strange how much deer like freshly tilled soil. Not sure what attracts them........but they seem to like walking in it.

Only planted an acre of sugar beets. They are rr so I will be able to control the weeds. If they grow they will provide a lot of late season food.

^ looks like you got as sandy of ground as I do Tom. Hopefully we get some rain this week. I thought you went to a drill? no? If so.....why are you not doing no-till? ( Just curious.)

The soil by me is called Antigo silt loam. It is so dry right now it is powder. My drill is a Van Brunt grain drill which requires tillage before planting with it. I looked at no till drills but my L3301 would not handle them well and 2nd I can not justify the cost vs amount of use for me.

Corn on the rental ag and foodplots has emerged. The foodplot with light soil has sparse emergence.
