Got the rye spread this morning. We just had a couple of nice showers. If we get more tonight and Sunday, he may actually get a decent plot yet .45" last night. An inch or so of rain on Sunday/Monday should almost guarantee a decent rye plot.

An inch or so of rain on Sunday/Monday should almost guarantee a decent rye plot. We got the fertilizer down this morning along with a few lbs of forage radish, turnips, and red clover. If it rains, it should be good. If it doesn't, it'll be a waste of time, seed, and fertilizer.

Found out the hard way that broadcasting brassicas into a standing tridicale plot doesn't work. 0 germination and the thatch was insane. Broke out the tiller today and it kept gumming up with tridicale stalks. I've done it with rye and never had an issue. Owell, it got replanted today and with any luck, we should get a brassica stand yet.

Yep it was sprayed and was dead. I Mayne seeded it to heavy the fall before but they stuff did seem to grow taller then rye does on our place. Ya learn something new every year with food plots

Seems like it would be something other than just the fact that it was triticale rather than rye that caused the fail but who knows? Was it rolled down on top of brassicas or left standing? Was it so thick that brassicas could get through and get some sun?

We mowed it probably a month ago and sprayed it 2 weeks ago. We then spread the seed and got .7 inches the next morning. I believe the seed wasn't able to get down to the dirt due to the heavy thatch. I've always mowed the plots first, then sprayed and broadcasted and never had an issue.

When I did throw and mow I always spread seed then mowed and sprayed again just to be sure. Sprayed a week or two before spreading seed as well. Always had good plots with rain. No rain was a different story.

I figure this weekend is the last possible chance to get any bulb development on brassicas by fall, so I'm going to go spray a couple spots on my place and about a 1/3 acre strip on the neighbor's. I'll throw down some seed later today or early tomorrow and be done with it. If we finally get a change in the weather and we actually start getting some rain before Labor Day, I'll spray the neighbor's 1+acre plot and throw down rye and oats. Maybe some oats on a few spots on my place too. Years like this one make me question the entire idea of annual plots. Seeing plenty of brassicas popping on the plots I broadcast seed on Aug. 4. I may have a few bulbs of some sort out there yet.

I may have a few bulbs of some sort out there yet. I'm also seeing some oats/peas and brassicas growing that I planted on August 5th. I disked up this new and ran a drag over the larger seeds before packing the soil and spreading the brassicas, so I expected this plot to do pretty well. The conditions must be near perfect with the recent rain, since I'm also starting to see a few brassicas growing in areas I planted last Thursday. I just broadcast brassica seed in my crappy soybean plots and hoped for the best. Soybeans are typically my biggest draw, but the drought almost wiped those plots out. If we can continue to get rain, I think my brassicas could salvage these plots. I'll likely broadcast winter rye on these soybean/brassica plots in another week or two just before a scheduled rain. The rye should have another bonus food source for the deer. I'd prefer to have a nice looking soybean plot, but I'll take anything at this point.

I have the same 10 day forecast down here and it does not make me happy. I really need to time my winter rye broadcast correctly since the stupid birds will eat all the seed if it sits there dormant very long.
