Corn would sure be nice when there's a foot + of snow on the ground.. My plots are too small for corn/beans to avoid decimation so i've never planted it. Maybe a blessing in disguise but it'd sure be nice to have the best food around when the snow starts stacking up!
Got another acre+ plot drilled last night after work with the blend of beans, peas, oats, radish, fixation clover, dynamite red clover, alsike clover, and jap millet. A little over an acre left to go, hopefully finish up this weekend. Also got 19-19-19 and urea broadcasted on the sorghum screen which is looking much better than my massive failed attempt last year.

Yep, in a good year when the stars align, and you get a good crop. The farmer's corn on the other side of the road from me looks like shit. I doubt his yield will be worth the time to harvest the stuff. He's farming 1000s of acres, so I'd imagine he's insured. Last year they brought in truckload after truckload of lime and cow manure. He's brought in loads of manure every year since at least 2012. I think they've limed once in the past as well. The guy isn't skimping on inputs, yet the crop he gets this year is going to suck balls. I'll leave the corn and beans to the professionals.

I feel standing corn is important for winter survival, but would never plant it myself.

How early is too early for rye? The last couple of years drought has killed my fall plots. Rain has been good the last 2 weeks and looks like it has a chance nearly every day of the 10 day.
I’m planting clover, rye, peas with a little brassica strip.l down the side.
First frost is mid to late October. Dipper used to preach early rye planting. Am I crazy to plant now?

I think there’s a fair chance your rye will be quite mature and undesirable to deer come late October if planted now which isn’t a huge deal if the other stuff is still there. If there’s high browse pressure the deer very well could keep it mowed down enough to stay tender until winter.

Went up to land early early yesterday morning to plant brassicas as the weatherman said we were suppose to get over inch of rain today/Sunday. Got 3 acres of brassicas and also top seeded my miserable looking 3 acres of soybeans due to drought with brassicas. Get all done check my phone to see when rain is going to get there and they have taken all the forecast for today/Sunday. Screwed again by mother nature. Looks like next rain is predicted for Friday now. Just can't get a break with the weather.

Looks like you ottertail area to brainerd area folks hooked some weather tonight. Hoping it doesn't peter out before getting to Ogilvie.. Was up working on computer til midnight last night, watched the big orange/red blob heading directly for the land disintegrate or change course within a mile of the land for about an hr but thought it would happen still overnight. Looks like a whiff from what I can find this morning.. Dodge, dip, duck, dive, and dodge.

I figure this weekend is the last possible chance to get any bulb development on brassicas by fall, so I'm going to go spray a couple spots on my place and about a 1/3 acre strip on the neighbor's. I'll throw down some seed later today or early tomorrow and be done with it. If we finally get a change in the weather and we actually start getting some rain before Labor Day, I'll spray the neighbor's 1+acre plot and throw down rye and oats. Maybe some oats on a few spots on my place too. Years like this one make me question the entire idea of annual plots. With a few chances of rain in the ten day forecast I decided to go pick up some cheap rye at Pro-Ag in Eagle Bend today. 150 lbs. for $39. I know I'll probably end up with weed seeds again, but this is going on a neighbor's plot that gets nuked at least once a year anwyay. I got home and sprayed the plot with 3 qt/acre gly and liquid AMS each, and an extra pint or so of surfactant. We'll broadcast the rye tomorrow and I may go throw some forage radish and MRC down later. I think he'll mow the standing weeds and grass next week some time. I know it's a bit early for rye, but I'd rather it go on early and catch some rain than go on around Labor Day and have the spigot shut off.

Got the rye spread this morning. We just had a couple of nice showers. If we get more tonight and Sunday, he may actually get a decent plot yet

My welter's order arrived, so I'll be broadcasting brassicas tonight on my crappy soybean plots. I'll probably follow up on the same fields with rye next week - hopefully I'll end up with something that the deer like.

I normally show pictures when things go right, but here is a food plot failure. This soybean strip should be thigh high, but it is maybe 4” high in most areas. No rain combined with my lack of a planter leads to this. I normally do well broadcasting seed and disking it in, but this year it didn’t rain after planting, so only the deeper planted seeds germinated. I broadcast brassicas on this bean strip this week and will follow up with winter rye next week. Hopefully the weather improves in late august and September.

My corn on both sides is decent as the roots must be able to find water. But the lack of soybean browse made the deer hit the corn hard early so many of the cobs have already been eaten by the deer and coons.
The acorn and apple crop is still decent, so I still have a little hope.
