We have a ton of hickory on my place, my old place and dads old place. Squirrels and turkey eat them up. Never saw deer do anything with them. I do think they take some of the turkey pressure off the oaks.

This hickory discussion got my brain to working last night. On the old place, squirrels were easy to hunt. All I had to do was sit quietly for a few minutes and I could hear squirrel teeth working on hickory nuts or black walnuts. Slowly sneak up on them and "pop". I don't hear that here. Acorn hulls don't require much tooth work.

I used to squirrel hunt a lot as a kid. In oaks I’d listen for the rain of acorn shell pieces and know it was a squirrel. Not sure if the ears are good enough for that now.

I made some space for spring planting. Need to scavenge up some wet soil conifers for this area.

I made some space for spring planting. Need to scavenge up some wet soil conifers for this area. Hoping I have better success this year assuming it’s not going to be a drought. I tested it with about 5 this year is all and all are toast. It will work on a normal year around here though. I have a ton of them I can pilfer too.

Yes it a weed mat roll? It work great, if it’s staked in or rolled in properly.

Quick hickory story. 11/2 I snuck into a spot I hadn't hunted before, before light. It was sleeting so I had cover to use my climber. From first light I was covered up by deer all day in what appeared to be open hardwoods. There was a thin layer of ice and snow but there were probably 30 deer digging in there and I was stumped why. We do not have oaks. At 3pm I shot this guy and in tracking him I figured out the mystery. Thousands of hickory nuts on the ground and many still falling. That section of woods was loaded with deer for the next couple of weeks.
