It seems to be the time of year to start planning what to plant next year. What does everyone have on tap for next spring?
I just placed an order for 500 white spruce and 100 wild plums to plant in SE MN. I was a little disappointed the DNR nursery was already sold out of the larger white spruce transplants, but I'll compensate by ordering more of the younger stock. I'll also likely purchase about 25 apple rootstock that I'll use for grafting, and if something else catches my eye along the way I always have room for another tree or two.

I said I was done planting apple trees and now have 25 coming for next year. Also 25 Norway spruce, 25 wild plums, and 25 swamp white oaks from Iowa State Nursery. I swear I'm done after this...

My plans are to topwork Pipsqueak Crab on something, maybe on my Franklin crab.
I also imagine I will transplant just a few white spruce. I like them to be about6 inches tall or less. I do add some water crystals in most cases.

I have 25 ROD and 25 aroniaberry on order from IA DNR. Couple topworks here and there. 10 rootstocks to try some more bench grafting.

10 wild apple, 10 Ponderosa pine, and 5 Rugosa rose from U of ID. I think that'll be it. I will order/trade some scions for top working/field grafting. This will be the lightest planting year I've had since 2012, I plan to make this the "new normal" from now on.

Just wait until you are snowed in a few months from now and a nursery catalog arrives in the mail. Moderation will go out the window and a large order will be placed! Most years I come up with grand planting plans after deer season, then totally regret them when the trees arrive. Then after they are in the ground I kind of wish I ordered a few more.

Most years I come up with grand planting plans after deer season, then totally regret them when the trees arrive. Then after they are in the ground I kind of wish I ordered a few more. 3 years of dryness have dampened my enthusiasm for mass plantings. I'm starting to think the "best" time to plant trees here is October/November. Even now, this area is in severe drought status on the drought monitor. I'm also starting to look at possible maturity dates for trees. I could get lucky and have another 20+ years of time on this planet, but the odds aren't great. With spruces and pines taking at least 20 years to really become "trees" I'm thinking I'm about done with planting them. Maybe a few here and there each year just to say I planted something edit...spending the month of January on the Gulf Coast will also help avoid "winter ordering"

100 white spruce plugs and 100 hybrid willow cuttings. Are there any shrub willow thickets in your neck if the woods? Those always seem to be wildlife draws if you have some lower ground. I think I’m going to try to cut some shrub willow cuttings and plant them the same day in a somewhat dry creek bottom. Won’t cost anything and with a little rain they might live.

Ever see any hickory trees in your Iowa place? Are they any benefit for deer? What’s the goal for hackberry trees? We have a few here, but I don’t see them being used too much. But I really don’t watch those areas too closely.

Maybe Hackberry would be planted in an area that needs a mix of trees in a hurry. They grow super fast.

Well unless a logger says they are worth a lot of money, I’m that case they will go- See any deer using hickory nuts?

I had lots of shagbark hickory on the old place. I never saw any deer usage, but the squirrels sure went apeshit for the nuts.

Small buck was crunching hickory nuts!
