My dad is never super excited when I order a bunch of trees that he gets to help plant, but I remind him that I'm ordering far fewer trees than I used to. Tree planting goes pretty fast though when my dad and my 11 year old work together and my 10 year old and I work together. We should be able to get the 600 trees planted in under 4 hours if things go well. I'll start grafting apple trees sometime this weekend in between turkey hunts. It will be a busy stretch, but it will be nice when it is all finished. 10 years from now these 500 spruce trees could really improve the bedding cover on my new place. I don't know if I'd be any more ready to go back to planting lots of trees if I had some help or not. Knowing me, probably not. I've always done it all myself, mainly because that way I've got nobody to blame (or give credit to) but me. I will say that I feel like I could still plant 500 plugs pretty easily in a day. I'm just out of "want to" I guess. I do agree with you that planting your trees now will pay large dividends in the future.

I don’t enjoy planting trees as much as I used to, but I know they are needed to get the deer hunting to where I think it could be. In the past I would buy around 3000 trees per year and we would plant the bare root seedlings by hand with a dibble bar. It was not a lot of fun, but the results were impressive and I learned a lot. I’m hoping to plant around 500 trees per year for the next couple years, then eventually drop down to maybe 100 trees per year for smaller improvements.

I dug and planted three 10 inch spruce yesterday and fertilized the last apple trees. My back was not good last night. I can see places where I should have planted more spruce, but wonder if I will be able to enjoy them in ten years. I might plant 3 or 4 more, just because that is what I do.

One thing I do wish I would have started doing here since I started planting evergreens in 2013 is that I wish I would have gone around with Deer Out or some other repellent and hit as many young seedlings/plugs as I could find in late fall/early winter. I've lost literally thousands of evergreens to deer and bunnies. I always had the attitude of "I'll just keep planting 'em" to replace what I lost. Problem is, the loss isn't really the trees...it's time. As it is now, I'll be an old ass man by the time the trees I plant this year are anywhere near being a "tree" Get the trees in the ground when you're as young as is possible.

I was really impressed with the dolgo seedlings from Yellow River Nursery. This is the first time I've ordered from them and they were actually a little too large for my scion this year, which is the opposite of my issue the past few years with rootstock from the county. I saved a couple of the larger dolgo seedlings and had my boys pot them up so we can baby them for a year for planting either this fall or next spring.
The white spruce and wild plum from the DNR nursery also look really nice. We planted a few behind our house last night and the rest will go on the new place this weekend.

Jason Tank (Minnesota Habitat Management)
Plug style, they are $4 each . I’m not sure where he gets them. They are very healthy and typically good survival.

I planted 8 crab apple, 4 plum, and 2 blueberry bushes this year. I have a few Chestnut coming yet. Then I’m done. Last year was 100 each of white spruce, ninebark, and red osier. They didn’t fair too well. Some of the spruce are doing OK. The rest never got going. It was a dry year.
