What is best shrub to plant that hold its leaves the longest. I need a screen to get into a blind. I was thinking ninebark. Ninebark loses its leaves by mid fall in Wisconsin where i planted a bunch. A row of evergreens like spruce or cedars would make a great visual screen. That’s a nice buck, good work. What kind of hickory trees were the deer hitting? Shagbark and bitternut hickory are found and areas further south, but I’m not familiar with deer usage.

I would say one is shagbark if the name holds true. I could do evergreens but I was hoping for something that grows faster.

The ninebark I planted grew pretty slow.
You could get a quick wall of growth with hybrid poplar or hybrid willow, but they lose their leaves early. White spruce grow slow the first couple years, but eventually grow about 18” per year.

I would do a thick strip of Hybrid willow or poplar and also some spruce for the long term, if you have the space.

I have a couple hybrid willow at my place from big rock trees. I will see if I can get some cuttings off them. Leaning towards Norway Spruce. Looks like they are fastest growing.

Is there more to planting cuttings than this? These are some silkies, I snipped off some branchless growth from this past year, pushed in ground until I met resistance, snip top off leaving 2 buds above ground. I then covered with a cage.

On a 12" cutting, I used to get 9-10" in the ground w/ a bud or two above. I used a tile probe to make a pilot hole.

I've had really good luck using 1-2 gallon posts and filling them with soil and pushing in cuttings until they hit the bottom of the pot. I usually put 4-6 cuttings in each pot and that typically assures at least a cutting or two will live. I also only leave an inch or two above ground though so they don't dont send up more new growth than the roots can keep up with. If you keep them well watered, they seem to do pretty well and can be planted during the fall dormant season or the following spring. Sometimes I keep them potted for another year if I want them to be extra large.

I have had success just sticking them in moist ground. I started using cardboard and sticking the cuttings thru that then cage. I think the weed suppression helps.

I've only had luck w/ some type of weed mat or plastic with cuttings. And protection.

There were two boxes by my garage today- one was the 500 spruce and 100 wild plum from the mn dnr nursery and the other was a box of 20 dolgo crabapple seedlings.
My sons turkey season starts tomorrow, so the timing for the tree delivery isn’t great but we will make it work.
I’ll keep the trees watered and plant them sometime in the next several days, hopefully without messing up the turkey hunting too much.

Now that we got some rain, I may dig and plant a half dozen spruce seedlings. My habitat planting is winding WAY down.

My dad is never super excited when I order a bunch of trees that he gets to help plant, but I remind him that I'm ordering far fewer trees than I used to. Tree planting goes pretty fast though when my dad and my 11 year old work together and my 10 year old and I work together. We should be able to get the 600 trees planted in under 4 hours if things go well.
I'll start grafting apple trees sometime this weekend in between turkey hunts. It will be a busy stretch, but it will be nice when it is all finished. 10 years from now these 500 spruce trees could really improve the bedding cover on my new place.

I’m trying to keep my order at 100-125 trees now. It’s usually a one day event. A good reason to take off work !
