A friend is coming over to gather scion on Sunday, Midwest Deer Trees. I will probably raise the scaffolds on a few trees later this week. I am not sure if it is good or not, but I use the chain saw. I don't think there's anything wrong with using a chainsaw, as long as you get nice, clean cuts anyway

I don't think there's anything wrong with using a chainsaw, as long as you get nice, clean cuts anyway I usually cut the bigger branches off, leaving a stub. Then go back and do the proper cut so I don’t damage the tree.

I look forward to the day that my apple trees are so large I need to use a chain saw for pruning!
In my back orchard away from my house, the deer set the scaffold height for my apple trees. I put wire around the trunks to prevent the buck damage, but they rub on any horizontal branch they can reach. Eventually the damage is so severe that I'm forced to cut the whole branch. In hindsight I would have been better off just starting with a higher lower scaffold.

I cut some more scions for a gal in the U.P. today. It's probably my imagination, but some of the wild crab buds sure look fat. I plan to get the rest of what I need cut and in the fridge this week.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using a chainsaw, as long as you get nice, clean cuts anyway I’ve used the Echo CS2511T for several years. It gives a nice clean cut. It’s about $200 more at Home Depot now than when I bought it though. It’s great on 3” plus wood. I use the hand saws on smaller wood.

I got an email from Cummins today about my Scion and rootstock order. I think it’ll be shipping in mid March.

Thanks for the tip, though.

Did some pruning and scion gathering today. It's beautiful out there. My body still ain't right from being sick though.
Art, I got you some Pipsqueak sticks, but they aren't great quality. Last year's growth sucked

I spent an hour last night collecting scion and I think I'm about half finished with that chore. I hauled water to some of my younger trees last year and I'm very impressed with their growth despite the drought.
I'm collecting scion to use for grafting trees this spring that will eventually be planted at our new property. It feels odd starting another new orchard from scratch, but it should be fun. I think the rolling terrain and soil at the new place should work well for fruit growing, but time will tell. I'm going to plant a large number of apple varieties eventually, but the first year will focus on varieties for the deer.

I was out pruning and collecting scion after work and I found a lpvfw tree I forgot I had. I didn’t even have that one on my scion collection list, but I kept some scion anyway since I thought it was a keeper.
I’m sure I wrote it down somewhere, but when does the lpvfw crab drop fruit?

Glad to hear it's alive. I think it's a crab worth having. The mother tree dropped fruit from September through March. It has since been cut down. Mine on Ranetka has been a slow grower, but I topworked a wild crab with a scion last year and it grew pretty quickly. I'm going to topwork another wild crab with the variety this spring.

That’s perfect, that’s exactly the drop time I’m looking for. I was hoping that was the case. I think I got this scion from you years ago, but I think I only had one grafted tree survive. I caged and planted it on the edge of a plum thicket and forgot about it other than annual pruning. I checked the tree tags today and was happy to see that variety. It had a couple of small twigs that I’ll use for scion this year. It has pretty thin branches like a lot of the wild crabapples here, but I’ve had good luck grafting to those in the past.

How big is the fruit on the LPVFW?
My all winter hangover from SLN is another tree that has an extended drop time. In the past I thought it was somewhat worthless since the fruit would stay on the tree all year, but the last few years the turkeys would hit that tree pretty hard and knock off the fruit in mid-winter when food is hard to come by. They must have missed a bunch of fruit that fell to the ground since there were quite a few deer tracks around.
I think a 1/2 acre orchard filled with late hanging apple trees could be a huge late season draw.
