I must have gotten lucky with my scions from Fedco over the years. They were all pretty nice sized. Definitely not waxed on both ends though. Happy grafting I’ve gotten many q-tip stem sized scions from Fedco in the past. They were all small enough there was no option for whip and tongue grafting. I usually always just do clefts so it was never an issue. I may try w&t with these though. The GRIN were thicker but, still not as nice as these. These Cummins scions are 20-24” and all pencil sized. I’m thinking the freeze we had last spring that killed most of the apple fruit let the trees grow more vigorous last year because there was no fruit load. Those are seriously long scions, very nice. Fedco scions had decent caliper for me, but most were 10" or so.

I grafted 25 M111 to the Cummins's scions yesterday. I ended up doing clefts Instead of whip and tongue. It felt good to be grafting again. I used rubber bands and covered with parafilm. I dipped the scion in beeswax/parawax combo. When I finished up the mail came. The Fedco scions were in a small cardboard envelope. Maybe 7x10”. I didn’t both opening yet but, they are puny compared to Cummins. I will finish up grafting the rest of my M111 rootstock tonight. I dipped the remaining Cummins scions tips in the wax to make sure they don’t dry out. I’m going to have plenty of scions to graft on my father in-laws old trees. He doesn’t know that yet. I’m not sure when my Siberian crab rootstock is coming. Hopefully soon.

There were 4 bradfords in the cabin yard at one time. The 2 biggest fell apart before I owned it. I killed 1 little one not realizing much about grafting and what I could do with it. The last one I grafted and it’s doing well. I have found about 10-12 others scattered around my place. Go 2 hours west to Cincinnati and every patch of dirt anywhere has thousands of them growing. They can be vermin like autumn olive or bush honeysuckle. My place in Athens has a bunch in pockets as well. I am just about to start grafting- have some scions, a grafting tools and ambition....its based off the premise of turning these CPsinto something useful. Have to laugh, they re all in good spots for fruit trees to be too

Good luck. I have grafted persimmon, apples and pears. My pear success rate tops all. I have some kiefer scion and I might have extra if you need some.

I received the Siberian crab rootstock from Coldstream. Most of them are pretty small to graft. I grafted 20. The others will get planted and top worked later. Kind of a bummer. This is the first year I received larger scions. I still have some M111. I’ll graft those. I’m going to hit my father in-law’s old trees and graft some varieties on them as well.
