How big is the fruit on the LPVFW? My all winter hangover from SLN is another tree that has an extended drop time. In the past I thought it was somewhat worthless since the fruit would stay on the tree all year, but the last few years the turkeys would hit that tree pretty hard and knock off the fruit in mid-winter when food is hard to come by. They must have missed a bunch of fruit that fell to the ground since there were quite a few deer tracks around. I think a 1/2 acre orchard filled with late hanging apple trees could be a huge late season draw. slightly larger around and a little longer than a golf ball on the mother tree edit...I've spent a fair amount of time in the past trying to figure out what LPVFW and Tank may be. I'm leaning towards Shafer for LPVFW and Anaros for Tank. I've grafted those two in the past, but my grafts were unsuccessful. I should probably try grafting those again so I'd have something to compare the fruit to.

As I was pruning and collecting scion this week, I also checked the tree tags to remind me of the varieties I planted. I probably should write down all of the varieties as I'm doing this work, but I haven't done so yet. I think most of the varieties in my home orchards came from recommendations from the fruit section of this forum and the old forums. There are a lot of fruit spurs on 4-5 year old trees that are probably large enough to handle a small fruit load this year, so with a little luck I'll try some new apples this fall.
Those tree tags are worth their weight in gold, but I really need to record all of the varieties in one place so I can look at my list and decide what varieties I should try next. Do you guys write that info down in a notebook or something electronic? I was thinking of writing them down on my phone, but then eventually transfer that info to a paper copy somewhere in case my phone dies.

^^^ I have most of my trees tagged, but not all. I used to have up to date maps of what I had growing where, but they are no longer current. I do have a list of everything I've got here on my laptop. I should print it out someday, along with some updated maps.
I'd like to have an updated folder that anybody could access. That way, when I'm dead somebody could figure things out if they wanted to.

I pruned the Smitty's tree and Wild Red #1 today. Both trees are good sized, mature trees.
When I have 100+ mature trees to prune its gonna be a shitton of work. I spent close to 90 minutes on Smitty's alone.

I hit some of my topworked wild crabs today. Found some better LPVFW and Pipsqueak scions.

We are big fans of crisp apples, like a pink lady or honey crisp.
I planted honey crisp last year. Does any one have scion for a similar crisp apple that they could share?
Pink lady Is a kinder crisp similar? Anything else that sounds similar, I would graft.

There are a bunch of varieties out there with Honeycrisp as one parent. I think many of them are club apples or still under patent, so scions aren't easy to come by. I did find a guy to get a Cosmic Crisp scion from. I hope to get a take or two.

It could still be under patent or protection, I am not sure. I pruned my KK a few weeks ago and have cleaned up the prunings.

Today I pruned/gathered a Wodarz and an Arkansas Sweet. Both were topworks from last year. In a bit, I'm going to go grab a few "road apple" scions.
For a guy who doesn't have any rootstocks coming this year, I sure have a big bag full of scions in the fridge. If anybody is looking for something, let me know. If I have what you're looking for I'd be happy to send it out.

I ordered 20 more M111 rootstock. I am into any scion that’s crisp if anyone has a stick they can suggest or share.

This is what I have coming. Trooper gave me several Arkansas black scion. I’m also going to graft his kiefer scion to a couple more bradfords I have found. I know I’ve read that it’s hard but I’m going to take a stab at cherry grafted to wild black cherry.

A word of advice...if you find a great wild tree along a road get a scion as soon as you can. We found a great apple just north a few miles last fall. I figured there was no hurry to get a scion since the tree had been there at least a decade. Wrong. I went to get a stick today and got worried when we turned onto the road it grew on. The township apparently hired out ditch clearing. There were trees and shrubs ground to stumps at the turn. We got to where the tree was last fall and there was nothing but a stump, sawdust, and a few limbs. I gathered what I could for scions, but I don't have a lot of hope. I've been kicking myself for not getting some scions before we left for FL all day. Live and learn I guess... A pic from last year, these ditch apples were tasty and beautiful. It'll be a real shame if I can't get any of the scions to take.

My mother in law had three apple trees in a row that were planted on the farm by her mother in law. One of the apples was very dark red and exceptional after some frost with a slightly pink flesh. Well, she told the boys to cut the middle one down and keep the end one which was the best. She was wrong . . I wanted scion. All were seedlings from Grandma Appleseed.

I pruned about 8 trees today. Those big trees have no end to the pruning.
Anyway, several trees seem to have softer wood. These are seedlings and memory tells me they are soft, summer apples. Anyone else notice this? Maybe just luck.
