Can I ask the size and the 'cost' of the pond? The pond and dike area is just under 2 acres and the buffer zone will be a half acre or so when all done. The true cost out of my pocket for the pond creation was $0. On paper it was a cost share for about $1000, but they “bought” clay and rock from me to cover my costs. I believe it cost the agency $1500 for the excavator. I signed a contract stating I would maintain it for 10 years with no other requirements. The ongoing maintenance expense (burning, mowing, plantings) will be on my dime. I had a similar agreement for ten years. That passed almost fifteen years ago and now I have tag alders, spruce , and crab apple trees on three sides of the area.

We got around 3” of rain in the last week which certainly helped. Perhaps they should have dug it deeper! It will be interesting to see how it rises and falls throughout the year.

In a few years, the kids will be doing this in that habitat project. LOLLLL I had a rental property in Ramsey MN with a nice house and 5 acres I rented out to what I thought was a nice couple. Until They decided to have a mud bog rally through my septic system on the property. Looked just like your picture. Needless to say, I wasn't to happy. Part of the plea deal to keep me out of jail was for me to fix the drain field myself and they would drop the assault charges. I now hate mudding of any type!

That looks like a pond we would find out in the Dakotas, it looks awesome!! How mucky is the bottom composition?

Nice work Honker. Great habitat addition to your property. Thanks NH. It already looks pretty good, but I’m excited to see it in a couple years if I can get the buffer zone dialed in.

I would love to see a picture of it Art if you had time to post one. Your habitat work always gives me some good motivation for the future possibilities
