My 5 yr old reeled this 34” up to the boat before it decided it didn’t want to play nice anymore. I had to help with the drag so she wouldn’t lose it. That was her first time trolling. She caught a small northern about 15 minutes before that. That along with the crappies off the dock it was a good couple of days...

them big slimmers like to play possum sometimes until they see boat. Then they run like hell. My 5 yr old reeled this 34” up to the boat before it decided it didn’t want to play nice anymore. Going back a few posts to catch all the action. Nice pike, nice crappie, cattin is fun as hell, and finally nice gills and perch!
I noticed you scaled them Brad...... I have not had scaled fish since I was a kid. I need to try that again just to see how it is. I used to love it, but just slowly migrated to filleting and skinning.

That is how the people do it we were staying with. I just fillet and cut the skin off. But that is the way they do it. They said it tastes better. IDK, I thought my fish the way I make them was better to be honest but it was still good. They also fillet different. I cut alone the tail bone to the back of rib cage. Put the knift all the way through and cut to the tail. Then lift up the flap with hand and cut back to the front on top of the rib cage. They cut from the front fin back and then cut the bones out. What do you guys do?

Cut from front fin down to bones and then back to tail. Leave .5" of tail attached so you can easily remove fillet from skin holding tail with one hand and cutting fillet out with other.
With most fish I then remove line of bones left in center of fillet... leaving the fillet in a Y shape.

Depends... if I am using a manual knife, I use the method that doesnt cut any bones. I work the fillet off without cutting any rib bones. If I am using electric knife, no choice. Start and the head and cut that fillet right off then take out the rib bones.

My only difference is that I dont cut it fully off at the tail. I keep it connected right at the tail, flip the fillet on the table and it gives me something to hold when I take the fillet off the skin.

I need that thin sliver taken out to form that y shape.
Funny how many people dont do that. I cannot stand the thought of any bones in fish, and I dont care if cooking them softens those small middle bones like some people claim. Take the darn things out and then I am happy.

I'm the exact same way. My BIL says "they cook right out." BS!
