Going back a few posts to catch all the action. Nice pike, nice crappie, cattin is fun as hell, and finally nice gills and perch! I noticed you scaled them Brad...... I have not had scaled fish since I was a kid. I need to try that again just to see how it is. I used to love it, but just slowly migrated to filleting and skinning. That is how the people do it we were staying with. I just fillet and cut the skin off. But that is the way they do it. They said it tastes better. IDK, I thought my fish the way I make them was better to be honest but it was still good. They also fillet different. I cut alone the tail bone to the back of rib cage. Put the knift all the way through and cut to the tail. Then lift up the flap with hand and cut back to the front on top of the rib cage. They cut from the front fin back and then cut the bones out. What do you guys do? We have an electric scaler so if we have any measurable amount of fish to clean, 10+, we use that. I love gills with the skin on. Crappies are ok. If I’m only doing a couple I use my hand held “magic scaler” or whatever it’s called. I’ll occasionally fillet and skin them. I go over the rib cage on all panfish. In Canada we use the electric knife and cut the fillets off, ribs and all. Others then rib and skin.

Growing up my Dad used to scale only sunfish. I remember loving them. I need to give it a refresher test.

Got my oldest up to the cabin earlier this week. She had a great time as did I. She caught every species in our lake except for a walleye, even a rock bass! Thankfully they’re “catching” as both my oldest and middle daughter want to go back up and catch some more.

Finally got a weekend off, and went north to harvest some Kab gold. So.....you gonna share the details???.....like which lake you were fishing? . I was up at our seasonal RV on Lake Kabetogama. My son drove over from Bemidji to help me beat up on some shallow water 'eyes on Saturday (Lindy rigs & leeches). I found active fish all 4 days I was there at depths from 7ft all the way to 35ft though. Most guys were doing fairly well. I hope the trend continues, as the wife and I will be up there for the whole week of the 4th.

It's been a while since I caught some eyes. That net full of fish looks good!
Taking kids fishing is the best. Way to go!

He's 23 now, so sometimes it's more like he is taking me fishing now. Sure makes it easier to get up early when I know I'm spending the day fishing with one of my boys. It's a lot harder to kick their ass now!

Don't do much fishing anymore unless it is work related. Took some customers out on the St Laurence River. Guide wanted to go after bass and perch for the shore lunch that was planned. I talked him into taking us to a walleye spot to start the day. I have never fished this river but have heard stories of monster walleyes. About 1 hour in I landed this gal. By far my biggest eye 30" 9.3lbs. An absolutely gorgeous river know as the Thousand Islands if anyone is ever in Northern NY it is worth checking out. I feel silly for never have been there before for being a hour away. I won't wait 43 years to return

Rented a VRBO cabin and will be up there for about a week. Very excited. We went last year and the biggest walleye out of our group was 27” I think. I didn’t catch anything over 18” but we caught plenty eaters. Fun time

My wife's uncles used to fish that river for northerns. They told a story about them (probably 50-60 years ago now) hooking on to a sturgeon that was large enough it towed their boat up stream. They never were able to land it. They'd reel it towards the boat and it would run. I always thought they were pulling my leg but, I asked one of them last year about it and he swears that it happened. At the end of the day they cut the line.

We have sturgeon in a couple of our fisheries. They are highly protected and I think you may even have to cut the line at the boat. Northerns are still a main target fish for the guides. The other boats we were with caught a few. They will start targeting muskies in another month. It is a very healthy fishery and probably immune from over fishing due to its size.
