Pic of rootstocks, You can kind of see the ussurian pears towards the bottom, they're a different color than the taller anotonovkas. I was wrong about the pear caliper, they were all of 1/4" some a bit better. Thanks to Ben and Art. With any luck I added the varieties I received from each of you.

Your antonovka rootstock looks just like the ones I received from them. In the past large rootstock improved my grafting %, so hopefully that is true this year as well.
When will you guys start too working trees in your orchards?

When will you guys start too working trees in your orchards? I was tempted to start today. I didn't due to a swollen knee and a look at the forecast. Lows in the 20s for the next few days. I will likely wait until at least towards the end of next week.

In the past when I’ve received rootstock with questionable roots and tried to graft they’ve failed. It’s best to plant them and let them grow a year than graft them. One year in the long run is nothing. I will say stay away from Geneva rootstock. I’ve had very luck with it at all compared to B118 or M111.

the forecast looks good and I had a couple free hours so I top worked a few seedling trees tonight. This would be a great spot to have some late dropping apples, so I sure hope it works.

No frosts in the 10 day forecast. Can we really be done with frosts before May?
I won't start topworking until it's at least May, but it is getting tempting.

I looked back at my notes and last year I topworked my buddy's farm on April 1st since that's when he was around and could help. It was too early, but all we had to lose was some time. We had lots of cold weather after grafting, but half the grafts were successful anyway.

If you think we’re done I’ve got a bridge to sell you. If I see none in the 10-day on May 15th I’d be a little confident. That’s still almost 3 weeks out.

We had lots of cold weather after grafting, but half the grafts were successful anyway. I think that if a newly grafted scion has pushed new leaves, it is more likely to be damaged by frosts. If the scions are just sitting there, or if the buds are just starting to swell I don't think frost impacts them much.

You could be right since there was no active growth on the scion when the cold weather hit. I have a few smaller seedling trees growing in good areas that I'll topwork in a couple weeks when the timing is a little safer.

High of 70 today. I think topworking will start tomorrow and not today. Slight chance of frost this week but the forecasts haven’t been real accurate.
