I'd appreciate a little advice from somebody whose grown Sugar Beets. Should I top-dress with N? How many pounds of actual nitrogen did you put down at planting?

Sorry for the delayed response. My neighbor ordered fertilizer for his corn plots and my corn/Sugar Beet plots this spring. I lost the invoice with the itemized inventory of fertilizer(s). Stopped by the Co-op this weekend to ask for a copy by they were closed. I'll get a copy sooner or later and post it.

If your sugar beets are well established and growing......I would top dress with nitrogen to seal the deal. Not sure the rate to apply.....but maybe 100 lbs / acre would make 'em go. Seems what I recall from my past experience.

Did a little spot spraying in my Sugar Beets. I think they're coming along nicely but I've never done SB's before. I love the picture, but man I would love to go broadcast some Rape in with them in 2 weeks.......

Checked mine today, saw 1 that has emerged on .62 acres. SHIt Had old seed last year resulted in zero germination. Got my hands on 1 yr old seed this year. Broadcast then culti-packed mine late April and they're doing awesome! Planted my neighbors in Mid-May by broadcasting into freshly tilled fluffy soil. Forecast was calling for rain but had two dry week... They came in very poorly.

I'll get pics next weekend. 100% agree Rape/Radishes going into bare spots.

Sorry it's been awhile since I updated this.
It's been really dry at my place this summer. It seems like the Bermuda Triangle as rain after rain has just missed me. My sugar beets were putting on bulbs during the longest dry patch and it almost killed them. I should have taken pictures but didn't. There were large patches where the leaves wilted and fell to the ground. They looked well on their way to dead. We've had 2 inches of rain the last two weeks and they bounced back amazingly well.

They have received very little browse pressure thus far. Beets look very healthy. When do you see browsing start on your beets, are they mostly for late season? Does it require heavy frost? How many pounds of actual nitrogen did you use per acre?

How many pounds of actual nitrogen did you use per acre? I hope they start browsing the tops after the first frost. I'm guessing they'll start on the bulbs after the corn harvest residual is cleaned up. I need to look at my receipt from the Fertilizer place in order to tell you how much N. I think I still have it in my office.

An interesting observation for anybody who might be considering Sugar Beets. I planted mine April 30th and my neighbors May 20th. Mine flourished in cool temps with a couple timely rains. His struggled to the point where he wanted to plow them under. His were smaller with very little bulb during the longest strech of dry. His never wilted or showed much moisture stress. Mine had decent bulbs when the dry patch hit and they appeared to be dying. His have now canopied and look great. Mine bounced back amazingly well & I have some huge bulbs.
