I have planted wheat when I️ could not get rye seed. My deer eat both. I️ think rye continues to grow at lower temps than wheat.
I️ think Jbird prefers wheat since he tills it in. Rye stems are long and cause him problems.

Yep - I did a side by side test in a plot of mine a year ago or so. I didn't see any real usage difference between the wheat and rye by the deer, what I did see was the rye grew more in the cooler temps and come spring the rye was far taller and more stemy/tough than the wheat was. I tend to just broadcast either along with some brassica (turnip or radish) and the rain does the rest. I can't recall off the top of my head if the trial plot was tilled or not.....I think it was. I broadcast wheat into my standing beans this year and it has done well. I'm sure the birds got some and not all of it grew, but it's just for diversity as I don't have the brutal winters like the guys up nort. Lots of farmers here use wheat as a cover crop as well, vs rye. Many cut it in the spring for animal feed and then terminate prior to row planting. I avoid using rye because it gets waist high here and gets tough and becomes a real bitch with rotary equipment if you don't terminate it first. The advantages of rye that I see/saw don't make up for the issues it causes me. I can however see how the growth at the lower temps can make a significant difference in much colder temps.

Mow rye off when is gets 12-18" tall. then it can be disked in or tilled in.

70% of the Sugar Beets bulbs are partially eaten. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of late season interest.

Art were both you and Stu looking at my sugar beet plot also? Jerry, I just can’t seem to remember. We looked at plots you had out back with some strips of cover between them. You have great soil compared to what I have.

Art were both you and Stu looking at my sugar beet plot also? If I recall correctly (IIRC)........Stu, Art and I went over to Little Jerry's place when I picked up Jerry's planter. I thought Art and Stu went with Jerry to look at those plots. I walked part way there....but had a pretty sore hip.....and went back to the truck to wait. (later I had to get a new hip.....so I had a legitimate excuse ).

70% of the Sugar Beets bulbs are partially eaten. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of late season interest. What if you tried to grow small bulbs, any chance they may be more palatable. Maybe huge is not better?

^ I think this is true in turnips and radishes. I believe the bigger bulbs become woody and not as palatable as the somewhat smaller bulbs. Also....on the big ones they just seem to take a few bites and leave the rest anyway. With the smaller bulbs they seem to eat the whole thing. At least thats been my observation. Also, I'm kinda cheap and dont want to spend excessively on fertilizer to grow bigger stuff. . FORE!
