I have mentioned in a couple posts that my wife and I are planning on moving out of state to north Idaho in the early summer. One thing we have been debating is putting in about a 3.5 month notice at work. We want to list our house for sale in March. Pretty much impossible to do in our small town without people at work finding out. Already had a coworker find out we are thinking about moving through a person that knows a person that knows a person that heard something. One other thing that will come is that I can bank OT hours (currently working 60-70 hours a week) and get an extra 3 weeks of vacation a year. If I don't start banking OT soon, someone will ask questions.
Currently, my work expects me to buy in as an owner in the future. It has been discussed some, but it wis about 4-5 years out and they haven't shared all of the details, but I know that they do have a structure and plan in place for how the buy outs/ins work. This is much better than most CPA firms, which is kind of amusing since they generally advise their business owner clients on things like that. Anyways, could be a bit of a surprise for them. When it comes down to it, I make them too much money for them to fire me this time of year, which would be a worst case scenario.
My wife works at a advertising/web agency and does web design and some graphic design. Only around 18 employees. Great place to work, might have the opportunity for remote work.
Overall we have very few complaints, just looking to do something different. Hell, we could end up back here in a few years. Any wisdom to share?

I have no applicable wisdom business/job wise, but can share the wisdom of doing what makes you the most happy. If you want to chase your dream in north ID...do it.

You ain't worried about your job giving you the ax as soon as they find someone to replace you?

Tough call for sure. If you don't think they'll fire you I'd give them the notice. If you're worried about getting canned better come up with a solid reason your house is on the market.

Can you swing two mortgages so you don't have to sell your current home before you move?

That's a tough one. I've seen employers react in all kinds of ways to folks giving their notice. Some seemingly crappy bosses have treated leaving employees with the respect and flexibilty that they deserve, while other "great bosses" will turn on the worker the very second they find out they are leaving. Best thing to do IMHO is to plan far enough ahead to make their reaction mute. If you've been there long enough, you probably already know what the likely outcome will be. Good Luck!!!

You ain't worried about your job giving you the ax as soon as they find someone to replace you? It is a concern, and this might sound arrogant, but it would be worse for them than it would be for me. It would likely take them several months to find someone to replace me, and chances are it wound't be an even replacement. They couldn't work me any harder than I will already be working. They have been trying to hire an experienced CPA for several years and the job market is tight on the employer side. And if they did fire me, it would make my search for a new job that much easier. We live the opposite of paycheck to paycheck, and already are planning on taking a few month break between jobs when we move.

Being the one working there only you can guesstimate how they will react.

A big life change for sure, what draws you to Idaho? Its a country side i'd love to see some day, being in Michigan I've never seen that part of the country.

What advantage is it in giving them a notice so far in advance? I would not tell them for sure unless you know your house is sold.

What advantage is it in giving them a notice so far in advance? I would not tell them for sure unless you know your house is sold. Due to the size of the town pretty much impossible to list our house without them knowing. One of the partners drives by our house to get to work. Housing market is tight right now, <40 homes for sale in town of 15k people, so definitely a sellers market and we are in the most desirable area of town. We want to list it by the end of March to catch the spring rush and have the closing soon enough that we don't have to wait around. So if we list in March without telling anyone, within a couple days people would know and ask questions. Also, I mentioned briefly in the first post, that I will not be banking any OT hours during busy season. The partner that handles payroll will ask about it, and I don't want to be giving some BS reason.

Hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking all a short drive away. Can hunt damn near everything. Fishing in big lakes, alpine lakes, trout streams/rivers, and also a couple hour drive to ocean run steelhead and salmon. Always wanted to live out west and didn't really want to take the financial risk due to student loans and things like that. Put ourselves in a position the last few years that the financial risk is small.

If you and your wife are decent at lying by omission, you could just tell the nosy town folk that you're selling the house and are considering building/buying a new one. You don't have to tell them where the new one will be located

When I quit HS at 16, I went to work for Glens Truck Stop in Rogers MN. The guy had no help, and I soon found out why. I worked incredible hours for a couple months, this guy was nuts, beat his kid and his wife at the shop on a regular basis. Got in screaming matches with everyone, so they quit. I lasted 6 weeks and gave my 2 week notice to his wife who did the books. The last day I went in to grab my last paycheck and grab my tools. AS soon as this asshole found out I was leaving, he grabbed my tool chest and smashed it out in the parking lot, tore up my last paycheck all while screaming what a no good mother fucker I was. I scraped up my tools and left, never wanted to see that guy again and short a pay check or two. Well ten years later old glen Haley was audited by the IRS. I not only got my pay checks, got compounded interest as well. LOL I thought what a perfect payback to that asshole. And then 15 years after that I went into Gotvald Implement NW of Milaca to get some tractor parts and guess who was sitting at the counter bullshiting with Dick the owner? Old Glen Haley, the guy that called me a no good mother fucker. Well after I got done intimidating him for a while and telling him he was the no good mother fucker, he decided to back out the door and I ain't never seen him again! Remember, what goes around, always comes around! Bahahahahahahaha!

You know what I do find refreshing is your trying to do the honorable thing in a world which seems to have lost its honor. There are still some good eggs out there, i'm happy to say you seem to be one of them.
