This has sparked some interesting discussions at my house - primarily with my 2 youngest kids. What is funny is my youngest flat out don't give a shit. She will speak her mind at home, school or pretty much anywhere. Apparently this has been a topic in the classroom and other places around school. From what I can gather there was a bit of a confrontation when my daughter claimed to be pro-gun, and another girl claimed that she wanted to ban all guns, because all guns where bad during lunch. Per my daughters side of the story and her words...., "Dad, I told that little bitch.....I said, BITCH! Guns are not bad, a gun on that table will NOT hurt you! The piece of shit that uses that gun to hurt you is the problem. We got guns in our house, nobody gets hurt, nobody is afraid.....you come try to steal something or hurt us.....then YOU gonna be afraid! That's what guns are for.....protecting yourself against bad people!!!!" She had the whole head-bob thing going and everything.....I'm expecting a call from school any minute now!!!! I think they have me on speed-dial!
So that led to a discussion about making your point but trying to NOT insight a riot! Damn, she acts more and more like her mother!!!

The whole thing is fucked up. I had a talk with my 8 and 12 year old about what to do if they are in that situation. When to hide, when to run, where to run, and where to hide. A talk I shouldn't have to have in this country but this is the new normal. Two things surprised me. First, how their reaction is this is normal and could happen in their school, I expected the opposite. Second, my youngest corrected my plan on where to hide by telling me their class hiding place is the bathroom. I was impressed and saddened a third grade class has practice what to do when someone comes in shooting. When I was a kid my dad said if someone bullies you punch him in the nose...how times have changed.

When we had our "active shooter" training here at work they showed us a video the police show the school kids. Same deal as you talk about, when to run, when to hide and when to fight. It's sad we even have to consider such things.

I had a good dustup with one of my friends from Mexico on Facebook. She was whining about the need for more gun control in the U.S. and i politely reminded her of all the murders, kidnappings, beheadings, rapes, drugs, etc, that were going on in Mexico. She shut up pretty quick after that because she knew she didn't have a leg to stand on.

I read that dude's facebook page. He needs to learn what an assault weapon actually is and stop calling any black gun one. Also wouldn't hurt that he, as a teacher support the constitution that protects our freedom and not bad mouth it/want to change it.
I'm not against teachers being armed, but I personally know some who have no business handling a weapon. The only way to stop cowards from attacking certain soft targets is it not let them be soft. It wouldn't be a stretch to arm SOME teachers/administration and have a secure entrance like our court houses use to protect the lawmakers themselves.

There's also teachers who shouldn't go anywhere near a table saw in the industrial arts room, be allowed to drive a bus full of children, handle hydrochloric acid in the science room, drive the school skid steer to move snow, or run a sewing machine in home ec.
