A quick stop at the orchard and then headed to the corn plot.

Green tip today on Dolgo, Liberty, Zestar, Enterprise, Parker pear, Luscious pear. It’s happening! I had to go look just a bit ago as I was gone today. I was a bit surprised to see I have a couple trees at green tip as well. Looks like Friday is dormant oil and copper spraying time. Never got that done anywhere near this early before. This spring is moving awfully fast so far

I put fruit tree spikes on the trees by my home orchard. 1/2 up to 3 spikes per tree. On the lighter soil, I put a handful of pel lime on top of the spike.
Directions say to apply 3 times a year. I only do it once. I do not want to encourage fall growth. There is still a little bit of frost.
Seventy miles to the north, there is lots of frost in the ground.

Do you ever do liquid fert? Is pellet lime good to spread around the orchard in general??

This spring is moving awfully fast so far I decided I'm going to wait to spray oil/copper. Most of my trees are between silver and green tip, and the weather looks to cool back down a bunch next week. edit...I took a closer look at all of my pears today. Only Ure is at swollen bud. Now, three days of 60s-70s will get things moving but I think it's a bit early for oil/copper. My understanding is that you want to get that spray done as late as you can, but before blossoms open. I'll keep rolling the dice for at least another week.

10 m111 rootstocks showed up a bit ago. Tomorrow will be grafting day. I'm trying to decide how many to graft to the ditch apple that got cut down last winter...

Yesterday I had tight cluster on a few trees. Hoping they stay tight for a few more days while this cold front is here.

I'll top work another wild crab or three yet too. Also did 1 each of: Crimson Crisp Courthouse crab Wodarz Arkansas Sweet I cut the tops of the m111 rootstocks into 2 pieces each and shoved them in a bucket of dirt. If they root, I have no idea where I'll plant them...

I reused the cement wire to block some trails deer were using behind our box stand. Some added brush behind the wire adds depth and deer are less likely to jump the wire. I ran a rough head count on this Platte River crab that I gathered seed from. The mother tree had about an inch sized crab. I would say that about 70% of the crabs on seedlings were 3/4-1 inch in size. About 15% are bird sized crabs. Another 15 per cent are different. One seedling is an apple crab of almost two inches. Another is the jelly/ applesauce crab we call ABC. The applecrab I call Platte River Pippin. Nothing spectacular to eat, but it works for deer.

It's getting late for a couple pears, but I think it'll still be okay to spray them. I'm thinking I may add a dose of Eagle (Myclobutanil) too just for shits and giggles.

Oil, copper, Eagle, spreader/sticker done. Only got a face full or two.
I need to upgrade sprayers. 15 gallons isn't big enough to hit everything

Nature is pretty cool. Ure and Early Gold pears were at green tip bordering on bud burst back on April 12. They are now at full bud burst...two weeks later. Our cold spell really slowed down their progression. I don't imagine they'll be at full bloom until towards the end of next week, which will be pretty close to normal timing.
