What is the guideline for the season? Closest Saturday to what date? I have no idea how shit works here. In WI, firearm season ALWAYS opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

The gun opener in MN is always 2 weeks prior to the WI gun opener (which is the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving)
It would probably be easier to change the day we celebrate Thanksgiving than change the opening day of gun season in MN. I'd certainly love to see it moved back a week though.

What is the guideline for the season? Closest Saturday to what date? My Dad told me years back that the decision was made to end firearm season on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. He said it was changed so hunters could spend time with their families. Remember the zone 1 season is open for 16 days. Guys, I have strong feelings on this and will try and say it kindly. It is hard to accept the logic of delaying firearm season for one group of hunters that has a three and a half month season. Most of you hunt private land and the decision could be made to only bowhunt that private land . The only reason for delaying it statewide is because the smaller group(bow) wants to shoot bigger bucks and does not want to share the excitement of the rut hunt with the larger group of firearm hunters. I don’t feel delaying the Hunt is good for hunter participation in what is all ready becoming a dying sport. Sad to say dying, but I fear it is true. Widespread cwd will make all of these arguments mute anyway. The state wants less deer, less bucks, and less mature bucks in the cwd zones. We will soon be left with just diehard deer hunters who if they hunt large areas of private land, can do a bit of management. The rest are screwed. I fear expanded seasons are on the way. Sad.

Valid response.
My only rebuttal is during gun season the rut gets screwed up to a degree due to all the pressure.
Seeing a true natural rut with little human interference is a very unique thing to experience.
Wisconsin has done it successfully for a very long time.

There is no firearm rut hunt here. By opening Sunday afternoon the mature bucks here have completely turned nocturnal. They don't get back to some sort of "normal" until 10 days or so after second Sunday.

I don't know what the answers are, but I do know that if the MNDNR doesn't do something besides continue/expand the kill 'em all deal they sure as hell aren't going to help themselves. Guys are only going to whack the shit out of the herd for a few years and then quit. What does that solve long term? The last I checked archery hunter numbers were growing nationwide while firearm hunter numbers dwindled. Seems it would be wise to offer something positive to a group like that...so you don't lose them too.

Agree with stu. With all the people screwing around the week/days before rifle opener there really isn't a rut hunt. Deer are so wired up from everybody in the woods they're nocturnal before season even starts. Today's a great example as there was a steady line of vehicles heading threw wadena and half of them had some sort of stand on them needing to be put up.

Walked a 300 plus acre piece today that had hunters in there last 2 days in a row working with power tools on ramshackle permanent deer blinds.

Art —the difference is you will still get most of key dates. The real rut starts later than most realize Nov 3 or 4. I mean yeah you see some bucks cruising Oct 29–November 2. If we interrupt that with the gun season, it’s never a true rut? This is so fun, I saw another good one tonight.
During early gun season the movement just shuts down. It’s awful, this is kick ass compared to most years!! I want it to stay this way!
Plenty of nice bucks will be shot on Saturday and Sunday as they are used to moving (not hiding). You won’t be taking a back seat ... win-win.
