My north neighbor stopped and talked me to yesterday while I was out walking. He's been at the cabin for a week or so working on stands, working on the cabin, walking all over the woods looking for scrapes and rubs. Then he says to me the rut hasn't really gotten started yet. I said "ok"

Art —the difference is you will still get most of key dates. The real rut starts later than most realize Nov 3 or 4. I mean yeah you see some bucks cruising Oct 29–November 2. If we interrupt that with the gun season, it’s never a true rut? This is so fun, I saw another good one tonight. During early gun season the movement just shuts down. It’s awful, this is kick ass compared to most years!! I want it to stay this way! Plenty of nice bucks will be shot on Saturday and Sunday as they are used to moving (not hiding). You won’t be taking a back seat ... win-win. I'm not advocating for a permanent week push back of the firearm season, just to give archers (and deer) this kind of rut action more than once every 5 years. Again, it would seem reasonable to alternate between the earlier and later start on an every other year basis. Even with this year's start on the 9th, there will be some rut action on Saturday and Sunday morning. I had 3 does feeding in the plot I was sitting near tonight. One little forkie harassed one of them, but it was clear that none of the 3 were in heat yet.

There’s a lot of guys hunting right now. This helps the motels, gas stations, sporting goods stores, etc.. Many guys are taking g vacation. Now they have 3 key weekends of activity instead of 2. The number of campers, fish houses, etc... way up.

A guy would think MNDNR would spend some time and money looking into what would encourage adult deer hunters (archery or firearm) to spend more time and money deer hunting. Maybe they do, I don't know edit...I can say that thanks to the rut action I've seen this year I'll be spending some cash on box blinds in the near future. Had I not seen what a real MN rut looked like, I probably would have continued to put off that purchase indefinitely.

I sent any email to the MN DNR gal and mentioned that many guys are hunting, taking vacation, spending $$$.
My phone has never had so many texts from hunters seeing bucks. I’m 51 and I cannot remember this much excitement for MN hunting since maybe 2003 or so? More trail cams and better equipment so I’d say more than ever maybe.

We just need to legalize crossbows with scopes for everyone, then this extra week of bowhunting thing will really have legs.

So what does it say about the rut when a doe and her nubbin buck fawn are eating sunflower seeds together in my back yard right now? Has she already been bred?

Heck, I'd be happy with this later start every other year instead of every 5 years. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me I like this idea, seems reasonable and doesn't push the season back to far. I would think this would get less push back then changing the date to something similar to Wisconsin.
