Yep, I think its time to buy sum lumber and rebuild.
My place is in the open also and the wind can really blow sometimes.

The wind that hit Jbird hit near my house last week. Luckily my house was safe and we were at the cabin so we missed it. A lot of folks claimed tornado but they now say it was just straight line winds. Lots of trees down and some were thrown through houses. It wrecked a neighborhood about a mile from me. I’m surprised the battle wagon was upright.

That would have been a damn shame to lose the battle wagon. Glad that held up.

The wind sure did a number on that top stand - that sucks! Did you have them anchored to the ground with anything? The top 2 pics are of 2 different stands. The one on the left was only about 4 feet off the ground and was made of heavy machine pallets and 2x constriction. It was a heavy mother fucker! I knew if it blew over I was screwed. It wasn't anchored - I felt the weight alone would be enough. The other one was up higher and I had ground anchors holding the scaffolding in place. But the winds still blew it right off and it landed on it's top. It was a lighter construction. In any case I have had these for several years and never had an issue.....but, that obviously came to an abrupt end.

That would have been a damn shame to lose the battle wagon. Glad that held up. Storm path essentially came right down I-74 from Indy and tracked toward Cincinnati, OH. It was a wide storm so I assume most of Ohio got it as well. I was really surprised to see the battle wagon standing as well......I saw the flag flying and was very relieved. I'm working on some additional supports for it to avoid a similar fate. If it would have been facing 90 degrees the other way.....it would have suffered the same fate.

That was my exact thought when I saw the picture. Good thing he didn’t have it facing against the wind. Must have been an unreal storm. I’ve lived through two tornadoes that destroyed my siding but wiped out neighborhoods less than five miles from me each time. Straight line winds are no joke either. Scary stuff.

Hi all!!
I have two spots on my farm that would be great for an enclosed blind, especially about now when the rut is on hot and heavy but its cold out. At the age of 63 I'd like to have a little bit more comfort and be able to sit longer. I've slogged thru this post and gotten a lot of ideas but two questions:
1) Windows - Lots of discusion here on windows but my concern is, since I'm primarily an archery hunter, are the vertical windows big enough?? Most are the size of about 8x24 inches, that eight inches does not seem wide enough if the deer is walking at all, even a slow walk. And I can conjure up a bad dream in a hurry if you let an arrow go in the blind and it doesn't go out the window and its bouncing around inside!!! Any thoughts on windows from you archery guys that use enclosed blinds??
2) Commecial or homebuilt??? Been looking at commercial blinds and the good ones are going to be about two-three grand. Building my own, the materials, by the time you buy good treated lumber, windows, doors, etc. off the top of my head, is going to be a grand in materials, then lots of time. I do have all winter to get started but with ice fishing, then spring planting, gardens, camping, more fishing, it could be a chore. But the wife is not going to be pleased if I spend four grand on two deer stands. Your thoughts, homemade or commercial??
Thanks!!!

I purchased a few soft sided redneck blinds this year. Haven’t shot the bow out of one yet but I’ve hunted from them and I’m confident it won’t be much of an issue. They were on sale a bit ago and very reasonably priced I thought. With the price of wood lately I doubt I could build one similar size for much cheaper.

Here's what I bought myself. It's the shadow hunter marksman 6x6 octagonal archery blind. Haven't hunted out of it yet but plan to next year. It's really nice with both an outside drop down window for concealment and also a clear inside window for scent control and comfort. I wanted a blind for archery but also could be used in rifle if needed. This one fits both molds. Edit to add: i paid $2449.00 complete shipped to my door in mn. shadowhunterblinds.com/store/blinds/marksman-series/marksman-6x6-octagon-archery-blind/

Really a versatile set up.

You'll enjoy sitting in it. A little heater and toasty warm on the coldest days. If I were to do another I'd also put it on a running gear but I'd elevate is 6-8' for better view.

Daydreamer, can you share some photos of your 6 shooter? I've got a couple spots where I'm planning new blinds. Are these noisy? I have a couple of the Booners blinds, the little 4 panel jobs. They're OK. But they don't seal real well, the door warps and there's always a gap somewhere. Does your Maverick seal well enough to keep the squirrels out all Winter? If a guy can keep the pests out, then attaching carpet or something to the lower walls would insulate and quiet.
