My golden retriever suddenly quit eating and couldn’t hold down any water last week. I suspected he may have destroyed a tennis ball and had a piece stuck in his gut. After several trips to the Dr and ex rays, I was told his blood work shows that he had eaten rat poison, antifreeze or a lot of grapes. And if not that he has cancer. We had to determine the exact problem because treatment of the poison or cancer is very different. He is four years old and a member of the family. I was up most of Wednesday night and thought he was going to die then but he hung on. My kids have taken it very hard. To be honest, so have my wife and I. On Thursday he had an ultrasound which lead to a biopsy. He has lymphoma showing in the glands around his intestines. It is treatable with a fairly high success rate. It does have a high rate of reoccurrence. So the decision had to be made. Put down our dog at Christmas or start cancer treatment. Treatment would take about 6 months to complete. It’s pay as you go and will total $1500 at the end. We decided to give him a chance. I never thought I would spend that kind of money on a dog with cancer. He started showing improvement after his first treatment. This morning was his first time barking and chasing a squirrel in the back yard. His energy is low but he is getting a little better each day. We have to give him 500ml of saline twice a day to keep him hydrated. My wife suddenly has nurse skills with an IV. I don’t know if he will ever be in a duck blind or on a shed hunt again but he is still with us. Doing a little better each day. Cancer sucks.

Sorry to read this! We had a similar situation with our dog, Oliver. He passed almost a year ago and wow was that tough. Enjoy the time with him no matter how short that may be!!

Very sorry to hear this. We put down our Trapper because of cancer in 2016 and it was a terrible experience.
Hopefully the treatments work. What type of cancer does he have?
Have they changed his diet? I hate commercial dogfood and after Trapper died I make all homemade dog food. Its a pain but my current dog is 14, happy and healthy.
If my wife would allow me I would have an all raw diet but she can't deal with it so I cook everything.

We have offered cooked eggs, chicken, rice, burger etc. He didn’t eat anything last week. Ate a little chicken and burger on Saturday.
He killed a bowl of burger and rice today. He looks much better than he did just a couple days ago.
I put my last dog down 8 years ago. We spent a few years without and now we have a cat and dog. My kids are 13 & 15 so I figured he would be around until they are out of the house. Hopefully that will be the case.

Best of luck. I spent the day before Thanksgiving in the dog ER with our 5 year old who suddenly couldn’t jump and wouldn’t let us touch her. They really are part of the family. Hopefully you have many more Christmas mornings with her.
