Just an FYI, the places I've checked already have their online catalog up and running for rootstocks and scions for next spring. I'm not ordering any scions for next year, but will pick up 10-20 rootstocks. It seemed like a lot of things related to fruit and vegetable growing sold out very early in 2020

I’ve ordered swamp white oak and bur oak again from MDC. They’ll be planted on my south facing slope project area. If I have extra I’ll give them to the maple sugar guy on the other side of the mountain. He helped a lot with the new hut raising project so I owe him. And maybe we will raise another one next year.
I’m not going to order any rootstock this year. I’ve got 70 trees at my home that I need to work on planting or giving away. I will invest in a solar charger to set up in my orchard next year to reduce bear damage.

What did you order for rootstock? I hope to plant about 40 rootstocks to just let grow as is and see what fruit I get.

Well I guess that I can probably find room for a few more fruit trees again this year, so I should probably order some rootstock too. I'm leaning towards antonovka this year.

I received a flyer from Central Washington Nuseries. I found it interesting that dolgo rootstocks run 50 per cent higher in cost than domestic apple of the same size.
Minimum order is 1,000!

I always find it interesting how much places like Chief River and Lincoln Oakes can get for dolgo seedlings. I think right around $7-$8 each the last time I checked with Lincoln Oakes. One of my dolgo seedlings produced a big crop of nickel sized apples this year. Some are still hanging, but most have fallen. That tree has beautiful horizontal limb structure, but it's pretty worthless for anything but birds

The sickness is kicking in...I wasn't going to order scion wood for next year, but I think I'll request 5 or 6 varieties from TOC. I've also got 10 ussurian pear rootstocks coming and I think I'll order a few scions from Fedco...unless I can find Dana Hovey, Kaspar's Winter, and Cabot Vermont scions from an individual. I figured I'd ask you guys, but am guessing nobody on here has any of those varieties. I am hoping to exchange a few scions with Ben as well.

I'll definitely send you any scion I have that you are looking for. I don't have any of the varieties listed, but I do have 4 pear - Beierschmidt, Luscious, Patten and Ely. I'll have to look closer at my WI orchard since I may have another random pear there that I forgot about as well. We can touch base when it is time to cut scion. If you have extra random apple scion I would take a few from random seedlings or lesser known varieties you may recommend for deer or cider.

I'll put together some scions for you at the appropriate time. I decided to just order Kaspar's Winter, Dana Hovey, and Cabot Vermont scions from Fedco. They have all 3 varieties available this year, I'd guess my odds of finding somebody with all three of those to trade are pretty slim.

I am trying to resist the urge, but am all ready thinking of topworking some seedlings that are bird crabs. I have two in the northwoods and am thinking of chestnut, big dog, or Buckman.. or all three.

They were frozen and the one I tried after thawing was barely ok.

Just last weekend the fruit was still a vibrant yellow. Today, they are almost all brown. That one night of single digit temps really nailed the fruit. There was a bunch on the ground, but there was still a huge number hanging. If I was smart, I'd just graft 8-10 of that tree and plant them in a clump near the house. Go out and whack a bunch of the fruit off the trees every so often all winter long...should be great for shed hunting I'd think.
