I grabbed a couple of the courthouse crabs yesterday. It doesn’t look like many are falling yet. They were frozen and the one I tried after thawing was barely ok. I had to go to L.P. to finally re-new my driver's license today. I drove past the tree I call Tank. Just last weekend the fruit was still a vibrant yellow. Today, they are almost all brown. That one night of single digit temps really nailed the fruit. There was a bunch on the ground, but there was still a huge number hanging. If I was smart, I'd just graft 8-10 of that tree and plant them in a clump near the house. Go out and whack a bunch of the fruit off the trees every so often all winter long...should be great for shed hunting I'd think. Shed hunting = shooting them from the shed?

I agree that a few of these apple crabs could feed some deer through the winter. Tank, Buckman, Big Dog, and maybe Courthouse.

Just got done walking with Bob, we were standing there shooting the shit at the end of his driveway and can see my "not Whitney crab" from there. It too is still holding a bunch of fruit. What's interesting is that they're still a vibrant red. I don't know what that tree is, but it does okay for feeding deer.

I wish I had a dozen more of these on my property preferably in my orchards. This is my N.H. Gold apple. Has produced large crops 11 of 12 years. These apples will hang into January/February. It did get hit hard by apple scab in 2019 but, all of New England did.

Other than having too many scions ordered and nowhere in mind to plant half of the rootstocks I've got ordered....nope. I have found a couple other guys to send some of my wild tree scions to though.

Any changes in plans for grafting? I haven’t ordered any scion. Small Chunk, what do you have planned with the new place for fruit trees? I ended up making a larger ¨nursery¨ at the new place. I went light on rootstock this spring compared to the last few. I got 20 dolgo seedlings, 10 antonovka and 10 B.118. I´ll be looking to get some scion for this spring, as I don´t have all of my trees anymore to get scion from! We will have to do a Scion exchange post to see what people are needing/looking for this spring!

SmallChunk, I will gladly help you out with any scion I have. Same for Stu or Carl or any of the regulars on here.
Stu, please save a stick of Smitty’s or anything else that is very interesting.

Looking at the 10 day forecast and no sub zero weather on it. I’ll be looking at starting to prune by late January if the polar vortex doesn’t dip. I will look for scions from the N.H. Red deer crab and the N.H. Gold.
