I was able to snip a couple of sticks from an old pear tree today. The flowers are just beginning to open so it was definitely not dormant. Is their any chance it could be grafted tomorrow? Or do the scion have to be dormant?
I’ll also be attempting my first apple grafts tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Snipped some persimmon from the best tree at dads old place today. They are still a few weeks from waking up. I’ll leave them in the fridge for now.

Root system on open pollinated KinderKrisp seedling. The seed sprouted about one year ago.

. Root graft of Lee 37 on a piece of dolgo root. I imagine this root system is two years old. i have more faith in this type of root versus the Antanovka type of root. It seems like these take off faster.

Looking at the 10 day forecast and no sub zero weather on it. I’ll be looking at starting to prune by late January if the polar vortex doesn’t dip. I will look for scions from the N.H. Red deer crab and the N.H. Gold. I did a search for red deer crab and came up with this post of yours. The r.d.c. scions that I got takes on last year seem to be quite upright growers. Does the mother tree have similar growth?

Does the mother tree have similar growth? I never really thought of it as an upright grower but looking at this photo I guess maybe it is. I did quite a lot of pruning on it this year to open more light to the trunk and limbs. I wonder if that’ll effect the size of the apples or will they stay the same size? There’s going to be a huge crop regardless.

it was a productive fruit tree night for the first time in over a week. I've been working on my crp planting and food plots recently, but most of that is done finally. I potted 14 Apple trees tonight that I grafted a couple weeks ago and topworked another 10 trees tonight. Things are looking pretty good. It it was too dark for a decent picture, but a frankentree I grafted 2 years ago is flowering already. This tree will be pretty funny looking when I cut off the red splendor main leader and let the grafted branches take over.
