There is no logic, they simply don't know what they are doing. Every farm country public parcel should have a 5-15 acre shelterbelt of trees that will hold birds and other wildlife in tough conditions. Preferably next to cattails and then have sorghum near it. I know too expensive! Just a fricken joke. But they spend big bucks are knocking trees down! ...8-12 rows, spruce, cedar, pine, plum, chokecherry, sand cherry, crabapple, maybe one row of oak for long term. I don't hunt public, but I tried to stress this at a DNR meeting and they said no we like grass. We have a local Sportsmans Club that has participated in the programs to create a wildlife management area. The last few parcels of land they have retained ownership so they can manage the land for wildlife.

Forgot how many acres you own. Doesn't 80 get you a free landowner tag? Todd County GIS says 95.5. An 80 that's zoned ag gets you a free landowner tag that can only be applied to a doe. I am sure I could go in and get the tag since I've never seen anybody at Fleet Supply checking the zoning for some land owner's property. I have seen them check on acreage amounts. But it's a doe tag. I'm not shooting a doe. I did not know you could get a doe tag by owning 80 or more acres. I don't want one.....but still.....I never knew that. Somehow I feel cheated. .

Does you name get added to a public access list when you get a landowner tag? Some reason I thought I heard that.

I have 2 doe tags in Nebraska and an either or tag for Missouri. Hope to fill one of them yet. I'm off work now until after New Years, so I'll have plenty of time....

Mn dnr can kiss my ass before they get an extra $40 when I can Tell everyone no. You should see the number of guys on mfl open in Wisconsin with kick ass land that never see a hunter. Appears a goldmine of free opportunity.

IMO...if there's gonna be a "free" landowner tag then it should be anybody who owns 80 (or pick some other arbitrary number) acres, is a resident, and whose property taxes are paid up. My taxes are gonna be over $4K next year. I'm pretty Goddamn sure I've paid enough to shoot a deer of my choice every year. Of course, no such logic would ever be applied in this liberal shit hole state. Does Minnesota have a tax choice for Tree Farms? Yours is tree farm. I know New Hampshire has that designation but, don’t know what it gets you. We have a tax option for land called current use. The tax reduction is about 90%. There can’t be any buildings built but, the state gets 10% of the timber va when or if it’s logged. It passes on to whoever you sell. If you take a chunk out of current use then you pay a 10% penalty. Seems to work out well for us. We don’t plan to build and I’m not sure if we will ever get logged so we’ve saved a big chunk of money. My land is enrolled in a forestry program. It gives me a tax break, but it isn't even close to a 90% reduction. I live on the land and that isn't gonna change. Taxes here weren't bad when I bought/built, but they are getting out of control now.

Guys appreciate deer up here and some damn good management in some areas. Taxes are still high however.

Your area is fantastic for big bucks though, no doubt. If I were to move somewhere in MN, up your way would be towards the top of the list. That said, if I move again...it won't be anywhere in MN. I can't take the repressive socialism that seems to only be gaining strength here and taxes aren't gonna get better in the future. This place will be the last place I do habitat work...if/when I move it'll be somewhere warm(and the wife requires ocean/gulf access so that means either FL or TX)

As long as the inflation stays below 3.5%, I won't be soaking any torches. I have no idea how the hell such a feat can be, but I count my blessings. Maybe it's because nobody lives there, and there's nothing to maintain.

Legally, the only way to get a free doe tag by owning 80 or more acres is if that acreage is zoned ag. I'm sure plenty of guys with 80s or larger zoned non-ag get the free tags too. I don't want my name on any more government lists than it already is

I grabbed One every year. No one ever called. That doesn't mean your name didn't appear on some government list. If it didn't, then it was a mistake by somebody at some level...which given our state government doesn't surprise me a bit.
