Sounds like you guys might have it done. If by chance he has any open time and would be willing to drive to my area I could use a couple kill plots made as well as trails to them. My stuff is pretty ugly, combo of blow-down and small trees. I will ask Jerry. How far are you from brainerd? He may go over there. Dunno. What kinda trees would he be working? You can always talk.....keep an eye on your email. Thanks Tom, I am 60 miles from Brainerd. Its a mixed bag for trees, blow down and live trees. I could cut down any of the standing trees but they would be laying there. Its nothing short of a mess. I was thinking of cutting down every tree that needs to go and then renting a skid-steer to push things out of the way. Much of this borders marsh so I could push the material into the marsh. Depending on his interest we could discuss what works for him. I'll keep an eye on email and if it works we can talk.

If I was in that area and had a bunch of softwood stumps, I'd sure do it for $350 an acre. ^ That's what I thought about the price too. I'm not certain how much work I have to do.....but it would be nice to have a east perimeter trail / road and enlarge and shape a few food plots. I may have 3 or 4 acres to do. I bet that my work would not take a 1/2 day.....but would be $1000 well spent. Hmmmm......If I could have a 5 acre field full of corn and soybeans in the middle of my new woods on my best ground........yowser! It would save me from rebuilding my stump grinder and allot of seat time. (then too...My neck and body don't hold up too well when stump grinding.) We are hoping corn and soybean seed will be available for our annual MDHA chapter meeting on April 27. Save the date.

^ Just off the phone with my Forester. It does sound like the guy with the machine could use another land-owner or two to clear some forest of stumpage. It sounds like he is going to trial a new machine from Vermeer for a weeks time......and is a day or two short of work. If anyone else is interested and somewhat close to the Brainerd area......I would connect you. It sounds like $350 an acre is the going rate (??) I suppose lots depends on what needs doing. It sounds like they can even mulch up my piles of stacked wood and reduce em to shreds. May use some of this for swamp crossing?? Hmmm. Still got that chain link fence Stu?
It sounds like there may be some cost share money on such a project. More to come. I do wish I could spend some time on my land to make a plan. One bad thing about being "stuck" here in OZ for a a few more weeks. Still, I will be back before the ground thaws out. FORE! Yep, I'd be glad to have it find a new home

I spoke with Al a few minutes ago and he said the guy is going to start mulching next week. He said the guy may even buy one of the machines if it works out. In the back of my head I don't think he can make any money at $350 an acre. Everybody else I talk with wants close to $1,200 per acre for the same work. He is going to have his per acre rate computed after he get 15 or 20 acres done next week.

Talked with Al a minute ago and the guy has the machine. Its goes through a 45 year old aspen cut in one pass very efficiently. (no video or pics) The guy will have his quote per acre firmed up better early next week. Best guess is more than $350 per acre but much less than $1200.

Good to know. ^^ I had called Al last week......but he didnt return my call. Been meaning to call him again......but I am not in a position to cut any stumps or open more land until I look it over first. Hope he buys that machine......would be nice to have in the area.....and I bet he could keep it pretty busy.

Quote revised to $650 per acre or $400 per hour. 5 acre minimum. He will be at my place Tuesday am. Free trucking within 30 miles of Motley.

Somehow.....I think I am getting screwed by telling Batman about this. Grin. (I was not back to MN to take advantage of the 1st go-round......it's all good ) Hope your happy with what he does for you. I think he is a great guy....and does the right thing for folks like us. He is a super conservationist.....and bends over backwards to take care of similar minded folks......IMO. Good luck Batman.....let me know how he does for you.

I talked with Al. Sounds like the logger is getting a lease/purchase on this forest mulching machine.....and he will be doing more work around the Brainerd and surrounding area in the future. I am making a plan to open up about 5 more acres for plotting and revising some trails. He claims they go deep enough on the stumps to allow disks and planters to work. I will be curious to hear your take on this Batman and learn how your project goes for you. (I may need a mini-tour of the work done at your place when I get back to MN??) It kinda sounds like Al will be the "Frontman" for some of these wildlife and food-plot projects......in that he will come to your place and estimate the projects and line up the work for the machine owner. I did ask about Big Jerry.......and he said that they would travel that far....but may be some charge for mileage. A few more things gotta evolve on this.....but it sure sounds like this guy is in it for the future in the Brainerd area. Maybe this kind of service is what MDHA or the DNR should be doing for deer in northern MN? Create some food plots in the woods = more deer. I bet the various deer organizations would spread some seeds if the openings were made. Here is a video on this machine: I think it's 300 HP. Pretty big size mulcher.

Fogy- If you can figure out a way where this will help the bees and the butterflies the DNR will be right on it. Helping the deer will be a real struggle for the DNR.
