Spring?

Just counted 16 robins in a 1/3 acre food plot (indicator of worms?). Deer have started hammering my clover and wheat. A week of 0 degree weather followed by a week of 50's (supposed to hit 60's on Tuesday).
When and what are your guy's signs of spring? My buddy from Tulsa/OKC has spring 2 weeks before us every year; robins come through, redbuds bloom, morels pop, white bass run, etc. Like clockwork, 2 weeks no matter what storms come through.

The big one for me is when I can get a tree bar in the ground deep enough to plant trees. Most years that's sometime around mid-late April. One year (2013 I think) I still had snow on the north side of the house during the second week of May. I couldn't plant trees that year until May 9 as I recall, and even then in areas where the sun didn't hit it was still frozen. I think my RCG marsh had ice until around Memorial Day that year.

“First Robin Of The Year” is a big deal at my house.

I saw a robin 3 weeks ago. We’ve had a foot plus snow on the ground for the last two weeks so that bird didn’t know anything.
I bet I could plant a tree all winter some years. The times I have goose hunted and couldn’t get a stake in the ground are the exception.
I think spring when we have those first days usually in March when it is just warm and beautiful. We might see a flurry after that first great day but we know it won’t last.

I like hearing the first turkey gobble and that usually happens in March.
I've heard some spring bird chirping in the morning recently. I have no idea what kind of birds they are, but I know that singing is really common at first light during turkey season.

We have 1 robin living in a crabapple tree at work for the last week. It still has lots of fruit but I can’t imagine they are very good if nothing has eaten them yet. My first sign of spring is when the snow pack goes under 1’.

Spring?

Just counted 28 robins on a 1/4 acre clover plot. It's crawling with them. I don't remember having this many at once before.
Digging is never a problem here. Sometimes the top 4 inches or so freezes up but a pick gets through that easy enough. Below that is always digable.

There were large flocks of robins in SW FL. On my old place I'd occasionally have robins overwinter. I'd see them in hawthorns and ornamental crabs.
I guess one of my favorite signs of spring here is when I hear the first bluebird. Seems that's usually right around March 20.

The mating calls of blue jays, cardinals, and chickadees give me hope. It has started.

Spring is a long ways off still. There will be more pain until then. And by pain a mean snow and shitty weather. Give it another 2 months.

Forecast looks great. I can deal with snow storms. 12 days below zero the past couple weeks was a shitshow.

Standing water and ticks. That's when you know it's spring. With the low snow load this year, I'm hoping to be throwing my early planting on the clover April 2nd.

For me it’s when the farmers spread manure. I love walking outside on a spring morning and smelling that. It smells like victory.
