Spring?

I saw my first robin on Friday morning and a flock of Canadian geese headed north on the Connecticut River on Friday afternoon. There was still 3” of snow on most of my foodplots yesterday. I spoke to the maple syrup guy yesterday. They’ve made 90 gallons of syrup so far. They’ll boil down another 4000 gallons of sap today which will give them another 100 gallons of syrup. We’re forecasted to have 50s to 60s for highs through Friday but, back down to 40s and 20s for lows the following week so he thinks they’ll be boiling for a couple more weeks. They just need the nighttime temps to get below freezing. Those operations are neat as hell. I found some more red maples along my trails as I was walking yesterday. One of them must be close to 2' thick, but the top is pretty beat up.

Just saw the first robin of the year. I did see a bluebird a week-10 days ago, and that's by far the earliest I've seen one here. It's usually right around March 20.

We have had robins for 7-10 days. This south facing, sand hillside gets snow free early.

I saw 4 more large flocks of Canadian’s headed north on the Connecticut River this afternoon. They must’ve got the message that yesterday started Spring.

The swans that took up residence last year in the pond across the street are back, along with about 200 geese. I think most of these stay put all Summer.

Trailcam picture from my neighbor up north. He has it on the creek between our places. He said the geese were building a nest until the swans arrived. Here they are attacking one of the geese. No more nest according to him.

Apples are going to have to have some luck that we dont get a major cold snap. I have to believe they are starting to break open. I havent been up north to check any apple trees to see where they are at.

I havent been up north to check any apple trees to see where they are at. I have a few with bud swell, but most appear fully dormant yet. I tried driving a stake in some tall grass yesterday, got maybe 4-6" down before hitting frost.
