I was under the impression people fleeing liberal rule were driving prices up in FL. The Desantis factor. That's part of a recent trend, true. Just take a look at FL home prices bought/sold over the years. There is a definite correlation between recency of hurricanes and home prices. I was ready to think about buying a year ago. Now, prices are so inflated it would be a huge mistake to buy IMO. I'd wager that the home we're staying in now would sell for $200K less after the next near hit hurricane. edit...one last off topic statement...I tried to book this place for the month of February, 20 23. No go, from late January through April is booked already.

You would think sometime in the next 8-10 years Florida would see a price drop ? But I don’t know if it will be much .

Our chapter of MDHA voted 6 or 7 to 3 against the crossbow proposal.

In Wisconsin crossbow numbers have done nothing but climb each year since they allowed it in 2014. Overall deer kill has stayed pretty steady during that timeframe. It has surpassed the compound bow kill and makes up almost 20% of WI overall kill now. I think those numbers will continue to rise. It's not for me....yet, but I don't have a problem with them as long as the kill remains consistent. In WI we are lucky to have 1 archery buck tag and one gun buck tag. I guess if you want to put in the time and get one of each I don't care as long as your doing it legally. We have bigger problems in WI than crossbows. Of course, I don't see the DNR or state government dealing with those.

I asked him how it compares. He said no comparison…it has gone downhill big time in Buffalo County. Not what it used to be.

The reason Buffalo county has gone down hill is because of Outfitters over hunting it. They either bought or leased any available land and run as many hunters thru as they can.

Tom--I don't doubt that is a big part of it. The guy I spoke with was John Dudley (Nock On) he is world class archer and now lives in Indianola, Iowa. I had a farm close to him. He said it went downhill due to many factors, crossbows have to be one of them. I remember living in Lake City, MN and driving around Buffalo County in 1993-94. It was amazing, the number of big bucks and deer in general.
Wisconsin started changing regulations, and I suppose more outfitters, more small parcels, all contribute to the slide. It is not like it's terrible, it is just not as good as it was.

I don’t know many guys that hunt Buffalo. One I do comes home with a big buck every year. Where he is at not much has changed.

A little history question?? If I remember correctly, that part of the state Buffalo/Tremp/Vernon County had a 9 day gun season. The first X amount of days were shotgun, then the last few were rifle? Would I be correct on that, or is that not accurate?

I don't know if Buffalo County was part of the old shotgun only counties in WI. Where I lived in Dane County it was a 5 day either sex, shotgun only hunt for a number of years (late 70s through at least the 80s I think). At some point, that became a 9 day either sex shotgun only hunt. Later on (2005?) it became a 9 day either sex any legal firearm (shotgun or rifle) hunt.
Dane County still cranks out great numbers of good bucks. My buddy north of Madison lives and hunts on 10 acres. His son shot a 160+ in 2020 and a 150+ in '21. He texted me a couple weeks ago. Had 5 bucks he estimated at over 140" eating in his soybean plot.
I don't believe shotgun or rifle makes that big of a difference.

Areas like Buffalo County with high hunter numbers who are at least somewhat selective results in the best potential bucks being shot too young. Only 1 in 3 bucks even has the potential to be bigger than average and of course most are big at 3 years old and active. How many guys are going to pass a 140 or 150 inch buck 3 year old or even know his age? Almost no one.
A buddy of mine has family property in Buffalo and in the last few years he hunted it there wasn't a buck over 150" in the whole neighborhood. Lots of older bucks with marginal racks though. He moved to Iowa.
