I planted 4 plots at one spot and 2 others at 2 different properties from 2 weekends to last Wednesday. Just using my wheeler with a spring tooth and some spray. Checked the spot with the 4 plots today and they seem to be just starting to pop and fairly well geeked in the low “wet” spots. That set up looks good for bow hunting.

What did you spray with? Glyphosate won’t even make my pigweed a little bit sick.

What did you spray with? Glyphosate won’t even make my pigweed a little bit sick. Seriously? I use 2 quarts per acre of Gly and mix in Power??, which is basically AMS (low nitrogen) to pull in the gly and I get a good kill on pigweed. You do need to spray it before it gets huge though. I try and spray mine before it gets 6" tall.

My renter says he likes to spray pigweed and lambs quarters before they are 2 inches tall. Here’s my first year plot in the old pasture. I sprayed twice with a hot dose of glyphosate and it killed what it kills. Everything glyphosate tolerant really thrived in the absence of competition. There is a lot of pigweed and other nasties. I didn’t spray any broadleaf specific herbicides for fear of drift into my renters bean crop. Next year when it’s corn I’ll have more options. I mowed three times but the pigweed is just too fast. I broadcast 100LBS of frosty Berseem and crimson clover, about 25LBS of the brassica trinity. It’s taking a while, but I’m finally starting to see some clover in spots, even under the thick brassica canopy. As usual, there are plenty of bald spots. But I’m done with it for the year. No fertilizer. Overall, for 5 acres with an ATV sprayer, a mower and a chest mounted spin spreader I’m fairly satisfied. After all, it’s the first year. The plan right now is to make this switch grass in a year or two after I control the weeds with a couple of years of cover crops and herbicide. That may change if I see deer using the place as is. Time will tell. I’m trying to be patient and let the land and the deer tell me what to do. The volunteer corn must have been drug out there by animals. If I hadn’t mowed it three times I’m sure I’d see cobs. The stuff comes back over and over from mowing. I’m impressed.

I like your idea of giving it time to figure out the deer flow. Deer flow also changes with alternating fields of corn and beans.
