In late June I broadcast brassicas on my crappy, spotty corn plots ahead of a nice storm. The storm dissolved before it reached my place, so none of the seeds germinated until a couple weeks later when we received a really heavy and short rain (1/2" or so). I was pleasantly surprised how many brassicas germinated and it looks like I'll have a solid understory of brassicas if we get occasional rains. Broadcasting seed has been a crap shoot for me typically, but for some reason this went well. Maybe the really heavy rain washed more of the seed into little cracks where they germinated better than usual.
I'm going to spray my soybeans for a second time soon and then broadcast brassicas and rye ahead of the next scheduled rain. If they grow well, I might pick up a couple hundred pounds of urea to give the brassicas and rye a boost.
In my opinion, the low cost of the brassica and rye seed is well worth the risk of spreading it and getting no germination. I'm holding off on spreading fertilizer though until I have proof the seeds are growing though.

Why not try winter rye or tridicale? We plant that stuff from mid August to early September and the deer always hit it good. I've got brassica seed. I don't have grain on hand. I love winter rye in the spring. Not such a fan in the fall.

Can you crimp tritacle and kill it? Never planted it.
Way the dry summer is going and lack of rain in the 10 day forecast might be a small grain fall plot option.
We have always plant rye or winter wheat.

I have rain in the forecast on Thursday night. I might give a modified effort to get some brassicas going. I think I'm going to spray Cleth tomorrow morning (before it gets too hot) to kill off some grasses that are coming on strong. I'll come back and broadcast some brassica and fixation balansa and then mow before the rain on Thursday. This way I hedge against killing off the clover in case it doesn't rain. I take care of some grasses and hopefully get some germination of brassicas, especially in some bare spots. I've had about 1.5" in the past week so I think my clover can take being mowed. Shoot any holes in this plan

Rain is in the forecast tonight, so I'm hoping to overseed brassicas into my crappy looking soybean plots tonight. I sprayed the plots Sunday, so the weeds are dying and hopefully the dead weeds will help shade the brassica seeds a little.
Some of my soybean plots closer to the woods are really looking horrible since the browsing pressure there is extreme, so I'm thinking about adding a little more variety into that overseeding plan there. I'm thinking of adding a light mix of some oats, rye, peas, buckwheat and run that over with a drag. Then follow up with some overseeded brassicas. That should clean out most of my leftover seed-

My plans changed too, I sprayed some areas with 24d and I learned you can’t overseed brassicas on those areas for 2 weeks. Or at least that’s what my internet searches found.
Since I didn’t spread seed, it is guaranteed to rain now.

Psst. Don’t tell foggy I took the tiller to 1/3 of the garden and scattered turnip and radish seed.

In spite of hail and drought, the Outback 1.1 acres will have some corn, with just a little bit of more luck.

You have some great looking black dirt in your garden. Your corn looks good too, so you should have some good late season food for the critters.
