Mo. Is alfalfa like beans where it’s easy to kill with just the slightest of frosts or does it take a hard frost ? Just wondering Why take the chance planting that early. Ground is so cold it will just lay there anyways. Stress on a plant if it does germinate is bad enough in cold ground. Why subject it to a possible frost as well. JMO. Ok Thank you for speaking up

But optimum germination happens at 65-70 degree soil temperature. Not 35. Just sayin.

I’ve got a bag of Whitetail Institutes clover and alfalfa I was going to make into a perennial strip in my bigger plot and thought about planting this spring but think I’m just going to wait til mid August and plant it with oats, WR, and AWP as the nurse crop. Then the following year should be good. I frost seeded the whole thing with medium red to get me to august.
I had thought about doing it this spring but wouldn’t til May sometime. Bag says April 15.
You’d be pushing it for sure planting this weekend.

Allows seed to germinate and establish roots into a cool month of sept verses trying to make it through July and august the driest months. Lot of positives to me.

I’ve done spring clover planting in the woods when sunlight was more of an issue. As soon as I could rake the leaves off I’d throw seed out. Usually mid April. Those did ok but after I sprayed 2-3 times the year prior. My spring plantings this year will be the EW screen, pumpkins, and a game bird mix. I’m thinking Memorial Day for all these. Each one says after last frost.

Yep, spring planting of alfalfa and clover happens all the time. But the longer the seed lays there and struggles to germinate and grow, the more the chance of a disease setting in increases. April 1st ain’t the time to plant up here.
