Ok. I need to switch gears. We just bought 6 acres of land adjacent to our 2.5 acres at home. This 6 acres includes about 1.5 acres field that is currently just old hay.
Land is sandy here. As you guys know I’m used to heavy as fuck soils.
Not sure what the cation exchange capacity is here but I’m guessing 7-10 so light for sure. (Soil test to come as soon as snow is gone).
Just wondering. What are gonna be my best things to plant here. This is a fairly high deer density area.
I’m thinking brassicas? Then plant clover in the woods where there is an opening.
I’m not a sand guy so this is all new to me. Just starting to think about what my plan should be.

If you miss the oats window, just do rye in early August and hope for rain.

You’re in the big woods with little food and heavy soils right ? Does that translate ? Just asking

Stuff that grows in sand. Buckwheat, oats, red clover if you get enough rain, soybeans, winter rye, sunflowers, WGF sorghum.
Actually, most anything will grow in sand IF it gets consistent rain. In central WI they grow some great corn on light sand with pivot irrigation (and I assume fertigation)

1.5 acres ? Will never have a chance unless fenced ?

You’re in the big woods with little food and heavy soils right ? Does that translate ? Just asking I've got difficult soils and haven't been able to outgrow their stomachs yet. That's our common denominator. If you see your soil is sandy without testing it, its probably very sandy, which means it's going to be hit or miss with annuals because of weather. The other thing I'd consider is, what will it take to be the best food in the area? You gonna hunt this all season, or just when you're not at the cabin?

1.5 acres ? Will never have a chance unless fenced ? Plant 3 bags of beans on your 1.5 acres. If it gets wiped out early broadcast 10 lbs of brassicas in mid June. If they get wiped out broadcast 12lbs of clover in late august.

Soybeans do great on my sandy ground with a little rain. I like mo's plan. You will kill off the sod with round up ready beans and if the deer wipe them out then you can go with brassicas.

I found that I can grow all of those crops stated above. But, getting the seeds burried and packed in the sand is crucial. Just throwing seed down does not work. My clover goes dormant before gun season and my beans get eaten to the gourd before deer season. Brasica seems to be one of the best solutions to me......tho the clover is a preferred food till it goes dormant. I always keeps some clover plots and plant some beans. The beans are a good summer draw.......and I can never seem to reliably overseed into those beans.
